ph1 172 rear suspension problems

Hi There

I've had the above car for about 2 weeks now and the rear suspension just doesnt feel right.

One of the rear springs was broken so I changed that and its only really made a slight improvement.

The car is fine at slow speeds but at motorway speeds it just doesnt feel safe!!

When I hit a bump (in a straight line) the car seems to want to slide to the side. I can only really feel it on the drivers side. (It was the drivers side spring that was broken)

Whats next to change? Shocks??

If the car was driven for a long time with a buggered spring it could of caused the damper to be knackered.. check for grease at the seal usual sign its been or has leaked.. although may have all gone already.. I had my 2 rears replaced about a month ago. Parts and fitting was just shy of £130 from a local reno specialist around my way..

I'd get it checked over by a mech though tbh!

Cheers guys. I swapped both springs yesterday so I think the balance will be ok. I have decided to order two brand new shocks just to be sure. If that doesn't fix it then at least I know I can tick them off the list of possible causes. Thanks again for all the help. This is a great forum

there are bushes that locate the beam, and the beam itself has a reputation for bending easily

hopefully it's the dampers at fault. even if there isn't sign of leakage, you can check if they've been leaking by comparing their travel with new dampers (ones that have leaked won't compress as far as those that haven't)

Ok. Thanks. There isn't any sign of leakage as far as I can see. Will get them off the car over the next day or two. It's noticeably just the drivers side so I'm hoping it's just the shock. If it was the beam it's self would it not feel dodgy on both sides ? I'll post back when I have a chance to put new shocks on.

Just to report back for anyone having similar problems. Changed both rear shocks today and it def seems to have fixed it! The shocks we took off could very easily be compressed and the new ones are pretty solid.

On my last clio EVERY shock had died, all would compress with my little finger then not come back up lol.

wow! they must have been fked!!! Im just really happy that I'e gotten to the bottom of the prob as i havent had the car long. I love it to bits but the prob was starting to take the shine off it for me.
