Ph1 172 vs ph2 172 cup

Right so I've been offered a ph1 172 and after the recent ball ache with my cup I'm quite tempted to buy it. What's everyone's opinion on this? What one would you own and why?

Whats wrong with the Cup first off? It doesn't seem a logical step to me, whatever's happened to your Cup could well happen to the Phase 1.

It's misfiring on 2 cylinders, and I'm losing hope that it's not going to cost me an arm and a leg to fix.
The only reason I'm considering it is the ph1 is a really good price.

I'd swap it. If the ph1 is in good condition etc too. There's something about the ph1's I just really like, plus they are the lightest iirc?

The thing is it's silver which to be honest is a vile colour, more common than a council estate, but if belt changes are cheaper etc..., which I doubt then that would swing it a bit. The weight isn't too much bother either.

But belt changes aren't cheaper, they're dearer due to having A/C, Cup's are cheaper because they're without A/C! :S

No mate. You need to really look into the phase 1 differences, use the search function. This 'vs' has come up quite often. Personaly fix the cup.

From my point of view I would much rather own a non cup. I can't live without a/c, auto wipers, auto lights, climate, abs etc. oh and crap seats...

Thanks for the input guys, I think I'll stick with the cup, once it's fixed I'm sure ill be in love again. It weird, last night I pulled up outside my house and just stared at the Clio, clean, shining and covered in beads. I hate it so much at the minute but I can't help but love it knowing what lurks beneath.

To be honest, aircon is only useful abroad, unless you wear layer upon layer on a sunny day. No offence but auto wipers and lights are pointless. If you can't tell when it's dark or raining and need assistance with lights and wipers you shouldn't be driving. Yeah cup seats are crap but ill be replacing the front seats with buckets at some point. I'm too skinny to fit in them, it's like sitting in the middle of a sofa for me.

The reason I like the cup version is the lack of additional items to go wrong. (Says me with a misfire) I was looking at a mk1 golf for the pure lack of electrical items but the Clio is such a better looking car IMO.

No one that lives in the UK needs air con.

err when sat in traffic, when doing hours of motorway miles yes we do ! use mine all the time, as said can't live without it now. Also very useful when clearing windows. Do you think Renault ie every car maker put it on for a laugh? I think not..

and also the lack of abs on a car in todays roads which is as quick as the cup is just plain stupid!

Not saying the cup is better ovs it all depends what you want. Auto wipers are very useful when driving motorway miles when its spitting with rain. Have you ever had them on a car before? or are you just thinking they are pointless?

yeah you would say that you drive a cup lol

FF and non cup owners- air con is great use it a lot
Cup and no a/c owners- air con is rubbish who needs air con ?

I dont see the point in not having the aircon unless its a pretty much pure toy, so I'd sooner either a Ph1 or a normal Ph2 than a cup personally.

Bitter LOL. I've had four RS Clio's three of which had a/c all of which i never used. I do live in Scotland right enough.

that's a fair point lol

Sometimes I make myself use a/c even if it isn't hot outside, use it or lose it I say like £60 odd to get re charged :dapprove:

Phase 1 172 is throttle cable where as a 172 Cup is drive by wire. Apparently phase 1's have better throttle response, after driving both I would have to disagree.

I don't even know if my aircon works as I haven't used it since buying the car lol.

As for ph1 vs ph2 cup there both as good as each other really best thing with ph1 is cable throttle. I'd probably just stick with what you have though tbh.

I never really used the ac on my old 172. The auto wipers, just laziness. And as for the abs, never troubled me. Take it you've owned a cup then and had a near miss due to no abs?

anyway I would stick with the cup unless you know the ph1 well. Least you know you car and its faults, might change and find the ph1 has more faults.

I bet the pollen filter has more flies on it than dog poo ! lol

Its a useful tool I think if you use it if not I wouldn't get it re charged

Phase 1's don't have auto wipers, or auto headlights, or xenons, or climate? So it's just a/c, abs and the same seats with half leather, but it doesn't have speedline's or the cup suspension. Its just pro's and cons, not much in it tbh, if you've already got a cup just keep it and sort it out

I've owned both.. current ride is a ph1, and back in 2003 I bought a cup new... very similar in performance, just a different flavour really.. nothing much between them to be fair.. prefer the ph1 for more subtle and understated looks more than anything but that's just a personal choice.

I'd probably go for the ph1. There is just something special about them. My 182 was a miles better car, but if I could have either of my 1*2's back I think it would be the ph1.

Ph1>All.

Ive had 3 172 Cups and 5 Ph1 172's.

Out the wrapper, the Cup is a better car but Ph1's seem to be more 'raw' and driver focused. A coilover'd ph1 would be my personal preference!

I'd still take a cup over a stock ph1. But it's personal preference, mainly as the dash is nicer IMO, having said that a flocked ph1 dash is nice.

ITB's, and coilovers on my ph1. It's epic :)

As I said you plank.. Stock vs stock, I'd have a Cup.. Add some good coilovers to a Ph1 and its game over for the Cup. ;)
