Photography Chat and Questions Thread

Yeah, it’s perfect for my type of photography. Extreme sports or the pro that absolutely needs those crucial shots then maybe you’d want to look at something better, but in general it’s fine :) I love the images compared to APS-C cameras in my experience, the files it produces just look special and the rendition of the bokeh and the textures are far superior IMO.
 
I don't think I've done one of these shots before, but the arrival of my X100 LE means my camera bag is complete and ready for my American travels in a few months. Amazing what you can fit in a fairly small camera bag when you haven't got a DSLR...

Yes there is an inherent silky smoothness to the full frame photos that I'm really craving

I considered getting a 5d Mark I a while back just as they're £400 and it'd be nice to play with full frame photography a bit

Wish my bags where that small lol! Currently got a prorunner 450AW and another large bag filled with gear I use, not to mention all the lighting stands etc etc aswell! :(
 
Are there many lens options are available for the x100s? Seems like a cracking little camera!

You might as well just get the mk1, just as an accompaniment for your 7D :)

I'll post some pics on here sometime over the weekend from when the lens comes.

As per the other responses the X100 is a fixed 23mm lens, but the X-E1 is interchangeable, 6 or 7 lenses available so far for that, all immense. The primes are awesome but for practical reasons I went with the two fast-ish zooms (which are still awesome).
 
Sigma are bringing some lenses out for CSC’s but none for Fuji as of yet, if they do make some for the fuji X mount then that’ll expand your choices.

Very happy with the lens line-up and roadmap for Fuji X, they are covering all the bases gradually and the quality of every lens so far has been very, very high. I considered NEX as well as I really wanted at least APS-C, but imo their lens line-up, even with third party options just doesn't cut it for what I want.

Just been reading up on those Fuji models (x100s & xe1) I REALLY want one but not sure which I would choose if I could afford either or.

Can you get much better for the money?
 
I still think the X100s is overpriced. At £900 is is really worth double the price of an X100? You can pick up a used X100 for less than £400 now.

Seeing as it's near impossible to track down an X100S I would say they're underpriced! I agree though, a pro shooting weddings (many do now) would probably appreciate the upgrades, for me, not so much.
 
Apparently the autofocus on the X100s is enough by itself to justify the price it's that much of an improvement. Lots of people rate both very highly though :)
 
Ok guys, bit of help please. Out of the three options, What would you experienced guys rather have (for all round use purposes)?

1. x100s

2. Xe1 with the XF 18-50mm and fixed XF 14mm lens

3. 60d with the ef-s 10-22mm & ef 24-105mm lens

one of the above would be within my upgrade budget this year but I just can't decide what I'd like. I love the simplicity and practicality of the two Fuji options but would be scared they won't feed all my needs. Like at the moment I would probably sway to the xe1 as its best of both worlds but i read its slow and colours are dull? Is it that bad in that department? Then the x100s sounds to be epic but limited with the focal options, which is a big issue, ie landscape shots etc, would it work? The 60d is a safe option but the size is a pain in the arse when I'm out and about being so bulky :S plus the canon stuff Is plastic & will no doubt be 2nd hand gear for my budget. I don't want sigma lenses etc, I'd rather stick with canon - snobbish, Ino!

Iv been playing with my 1000d (kit lens & 1.8 50mm) for a good few years now and its holding me back. I want to spread my wings abit and im due to be landed with a good chunk of money this next month and I can't make up my mind what to spend it on for my upgrade!

The colours are amazing from the X-E1, JPEGs are as good as anything out there. Was it Ken Rockwell that said they were dull?! Compared to a DSLR it is slow(ish), but I'm happily shooting motorsport with mine.

Hard to help you out to be honest, the Fujis are a completely different concept to any existing DSLR and you might love or hate it. I would go with the X-E1 option personally, the 14mm is apparently amazing and the versatility/quality of the 18-55mm is great.

The Canon kit is undoubtably the safe option and in theory would cover more of the average persons needs, but I found I just wasn't taking my bulky DSLR out that often...the X-E1 goes everywhere with me.
 
Yes it was them. Well that's the thing.. I dont get half the shots I could because its a pain in the arse to take the bloody thing out. Have you had much use out of yours as yet? What's your verdict on it?

i am VERY keen on the xe1 camera.
 
I love the images that the 5d's produce. Silky smooth brokeh and pin sharp.

F4 as any wider open caused the wording around the lens to go out of focus. I find mine a bit soft at f1.4 but pin sharp at f2 or higher. Probably my most used lens.
 
Nope, not one bit. The images are stunning no matter what the subject, the grip is big and moulded to the hand, it just feels really nice in the hand being a pro body. So all in all it's brilliant, I'm loving the HUGE viewfinder too, it makes framing a shot a dream.

Very good dude. Another post that makes me consider getting a better body. I just can't warrant it yet - I think my camera is still better than me. Whatsmore, how can I ever justify getting a better body when A_Cro keeps posting corkers with the same body as me!! :(

Lol. Cheers dude. I thought you had a 50d?
I can assure you, I have a hell of a lot of throw away shots. Maybe only keep 5% which is a terrible keep rate.
I am considering a step up next year in body but I think a lens would be better suited for me at the moment.
I've been shooting a lot with the nifty fifty the last couple of days as my mum wanted some product like shots of her flowers for her website but it is just an awkward focal length indoors. Maybe a 35mm soon.

Keep up with your body though I'd say, especially when you are getting the shots like you did at the air show. And that was with the 55-250 top wasn't it?
 
IMO a step up in your body can give you room to improve and it can inspire you to go out and shoot, I can't begin to tell you how much nicer it was to shoot with my D7000 after my D5100.

In the UK? They aren't showing up in a Completed Items search, the only one I was watching was withdrawn from sale, presumably as they received an offer outside of the bidding system. Another went as a Buy it Now within minutes. I looked every day for a few weeks on a good 20 or so different sites, never found one in stock, despite what some websites may initially appear to claim.

As I wasn't 100% certain how I would get on with it I gave in and picked up an X100 for half the price. Really pleased with it despite a few annoying quirks, not sure I could justify the upgrade now as it does everything I need from it.

Even got the big siggy 150-500 in there with room for more lenses/body. The hammock suspension system for the body is quite cool.

I see what you're saying but I still feel like I'm in the honeymoon phase with my camera even though it's getting on for 18 months now. Perhaps my views will change if I have a play on a better camera......

Nah man, I'm on a 600D - practically the same camera as you. I also have a high throw away rate. I assumed it was normal lol!

What body you looking at next? I was of the same opinion in that my money would probably be better spent on lenses first. But I'd hate to upgrade my lens collection to find that none of them fit my new body in 2 years time! >.<

I'd quite like a Canon 35mm F1.4, Canon's 10-24mm and Canon's 70-400mm before I get another body. I really like my tilting screen though, I use it quite a lot so I'd probably want a 60D next.

Yeah, the 50mm on our bodies is a challenge. I've written about 5 blogs on it being a pain in the ass in the wrong environment. But when you get it to work, damn it's worth it! Just a shame that the 35mm is such a step up in price. >.<

Thanks man, it was a 55-250 yeah. It's a tiny lens as far as far as physical size is concerned but it does do a decent job. It's just a bit soft at full zoom for the most part.
 
I'm not too sure on body. I have been looking at 7d and also 5d mk 2 but I'm still not sure. I really would like to shoot full frame but then I'd need new lenses anyway.

I've got a 50mm 1.8, a Sigma 10-20 and a canon 55-250.
I'd probably drop the 55-250 in favour of a 70-200 f4. The 50mm should be better on a full frame body in theory too.
I think I could use the Sigma on a full frame camera. Then I'd like to get a 35-70 ish maybe, something with a bit of mid range. Or even chop my 10-20 and get a 17-50 f2.8 as the difference wide open wouldn't be that noticeable I think.

One thing that I don't like though is CF cards mainly due to my laptop having SD slots and previous CF cards I've had have been slow and low storage capacity.

I'll probably use my Mrs' 50d a bit more as I do prefer that body. I loved the layout of my 30d,the way it felt in hand etc but it was getting old and the iso handling wasn't that great.
