Plasma TV "Running in Period"?

  Audi TT 225
Im twitching waiting for my TV to arrive but I've been reading about a 200 - 500 hour running in period on plasma TV's?

Anyone know what the deal is with this exactly?

Ive also been told not to switch it off at the plug after use so cuz the fans run for a while which makes sense. Any other tips?

When we got ours delivered we were told not to switch it on for a certain length of time but I've forgotten how long and we never turn it off at the plug in any case!

Ive read some stuff about turning all the settings and brightness down during this period but its all very vague :S

Now thats what I thought but after seeing many side by side the picture just looked so much better on the plasma!
I know I "should" have got an LCD but considering the size of the beast LCD just wouldn't cut it... LCD is best around 32" but this is a 50" monster and has a higher res than the smaller plasma's I looked at...

I might buy a smaller 1080p LCD in the future to replace my two CRT 21" computuer monitors and use the plas for movies ;)

ah just read something, says they're more prone to screen burn during the first 200 hours

Yeah we have one and we were advised to be very careful of idents. Things like the red button in the top right hand corner, just press back up and get rid of it. Don't leave it paused on sky plus or on DVD for too long (5 mins most).

Try to avoid any broadcast with static onscreen images during the first 200 hours of use. Easier said that done these days.

The 'running in' period is 100-200 hours from new, you dont HAVE to do it but it will provide you with better pictures in the long term and prevent any image retention.

Basically take it out of dynamic mode, lower the contrast (thats a bigger) and brightness etc. There are many guides on avforums.com

I have now set up 3 plasma's for the running in period. The funny thing is, one of the people think it looks great even with the contrast/colour/brightness lowered and havent asked me to return it even though they are well past 200 hours now heh.
