Possible blown head gasket ???

  Monaco 172 Ph2
Was driving up the M1 at a steady 70mph and all of a sudden the car just died on me, as rolling i tried put into gear with the attempt to jump but just died outm luckily managed to roll off at the services but car would not start, sounded like the starter motor was going and the cams were turning ???

The guy who recovered me said it sounded like an electrical poss sensor fault or maybe even immobiliser issue but guy in the garage where i take my car have said it sounds like there is no compression in the engine and making a presumption its my head gasket (am i wrong in thinking if it was the headgasket the car should still run),

anyone else experienced this or can provide any assistance in what it may be,

Cheers :dapprove:

Just to add there is sufficient water in the header tank and there was no rise in temp before car just stop ?

I reckon it's either dropped a valve or timing has slipped basing it on "no compression"
This guy sounds like he knows what he is on about, dropped valve would give no compression on that cylinder, snapped or slipped belt would give no compression on all cylinders, head gasket going normally just gives less compression not none. How many cylinders are effected? also head gasket going doesnt normally just die in an instant, again that sounds more likely to be valve or belt related.

Very unlikely to be a head gasket if there was no previous signs and it's failed that badly.

Head gasket failure would still run, unless it was monumental. lol.

"never seen a failed headgasket on an F4R"

how do they normally die then ?

is it just internal failure or smokey smokey ?

Guy at garage has said after compression test,

There is no compression in 2 of the cylinders and very little in another,

So based on whats been said i would assume its damaged some valves ??

And i'll take it that if it was due to cambelt as it was only done 12k ago the previous owner may well of not had this done by a renault specialist :( (or would this not matter if its just a valve that has gone)

And how often would the valves just go ??

Ta.

To find out what is up: Do a leakdown test and see where the gas is going, if was headgasket it would be going from one cylinder to the next, if its valves it will be blowing back out the inlet or exhuast. Take the top mount off and see if the belt is tight. Check if the cam timing is still correct. bottom line though, engine needs to be replaced or pulled apart either way.

Already getting it looked at and to me sounds like going to have to have valves replaced and obviously head set and timing kit,

Any one able to give me a ballpark figure in what i should be paying for this kind of job/work as i dont fancy having my pants pulled down, lol

Ta

Not cheap realistically, its 400 ish for belt kits fitted alone for example, then headgasket set and bolts are another couple of hundred in parts, then a couple of hundred in labour to remove and refit the head, then another couple of hundred to have the head rebuilt with some new valves. It could easily run into being a grand if paying full whack for everything basically.

Probably around £7-800 for that rebuild and new belts

you need the following

cambelt kit
aux belt kit
cam seal kit
dephaser (unless you are a pikey)
crank bolt
head set
head bolts
16 valves (worst case, approx £12 each on average)
cam plugs

plus 8-10hours labour for a mechanic that knows his arse from his elbow

Second hand engine for me, everytime.

Stick a new belt on and have it fitted and you should get change out of £750.

So as you know your arse from your elbow - how much would you say Fred ???

Ps. and no im not a pikey just depends how much extra a dephaser would sting me lol

ive just bought today a new headgasket, head bolts, water pump, timing kit, all for £117. So cant imagine the parts being that much and yeah im a stig and didnt fancy the huge price tag of paying someone to do the work, so doing it myself.

From Sandbach motor factors. I tried a few places including euro car parts and ces, they were all pretty similar prices. But smf is my local and was slightly cheaper. I know its a 1.4 but didn't think it would make that much difference.

huge difference between genuine and non genuine and huge difference between 1.4 and 2.0.

I'd happily buy a gates belt, but after going on a course where we cut open some oem filters and so.e aftermarket ones, I always use oem

I've seen 3. one had nitrous and lifted the head, one was turbo'd and turned the block blue from getting so hot, and the other had under tightened headbolts

This is like one of those posts that you really want to delete/edit, but its gone past the edit timeout... sure they didnt all have under tightened head bolts?!
