power:weight 190-200bhp

  Mk4 .:R32
Hypothetically speaking, if I wanted to make my 172 190-200 bhp per ton, would the following suffice:

remove:
-sub
-spare wheel
-back seats
-tar beneath carpet

engine

- cams
- decat
- matched inlets
- remap

or are throttle bodies the only way forward for that kind of power:weight. Not really got thousands to throw at it tbh.

Was hoping to do all this and maybe take it on the track and have a few lessons and get the full potential out of it

Don't bother, just take it on the track and get experience, car is way way way faster than your driving ability anyway.

Fair point ^

You'd could get your car into the 190's with those mods but you'd need to put it on a serious diet to get it down to the ton.

Spare + toolkit are about 18kg iirc.... backs seats about 25kg....lightweight buckets..... aircon removal.... door cards.... soundproofing.... engine cover lol..... even then you'd be lucky to get to 1000kg.

Best thing is get on circuit and learn to realy drive first. You can do more for track perforamce if you spend on suspension/brakess and more importantly tyres than you can do spending on tunning.

190hp per ton though can be expensive best way is intake manifold rework and then strip the weight.

if you want to be faster the best way is simply learn how to drive properly. £1000 sent on tract tuition will go alot further than £1000 spent on modifications

with trackwork you will find most time from the tyres, then brakes, then suspension, engine last.

  My trusty lil 182 :)
I've started my car on a diet to do the same and reckon its possible.

Need to lose rear seat and all associated gubbins (good technical term!), change front seats to buckets, lighweight alloys, after market exhaust and decat plus lose the tar. Looking at around 85kg although I need to weigh the bits as they come off to see for sure.

On the engine mods looking at caf into panel filter, matched inlet, cams , zorst/decat and remap after, should be near the 200bhp mark.

By my calcs that should be ~200bhp per tonne - and increase of 22% over standard. Given that the whole lot should be ~£2k it looks pretty reasonable to me.

Here, here. Everyone with a drivers licence thinks he's a sh*t-hot driver. But only a few can be. Go out on the track and have a go. Find out first whether you're any good. You'll only look like a complete idiot and embarrass yourself if you spend lots of money on the car, and get passed by someone in a standard car. If you're having fun - whether that means winning or losing - then think about spending money on the car.

Why do any of us own a 172/182 then? By your logic we should buy 1.2's and spend the difference on lessons.

Whilst I agree that tracking it will get you faster than simply modding it what use is than on a road? I don't go out trying to gt a perfect racing line round every roundabout (well not all the time ;) )but it is nice to have that extra poke when overtaking something or just not having to drop a gear whenever I want to accelerate.

I'll see you on Sunday anyhow ste but I would probably go the exhaust/decat 182 mani and remap route...then remove some of the weight but don't try and aim for a certain pwt ratio. With those mods you should see a decent enough difference and then on a track you can really enjoy its full potential

May have misread the post but i thought Ste is aiming for a faster track car?

Which is why i simply made my point of £1000 on tuition goes alot further than the same amount on mods

But i do agree that a little extra poke is nice, maybe i am abit of a hypocrite here as i do plan to change the cams etc on my 172!

Ahh right fair doos fella...he did say he may take it to the track so I think a bit of both will be good. Maybe take it to the track before the mods and then you can see exactly what the mods have done
