Problem with changing oil on my 172

Im going away on Monday, going to be driving round france so thought id change the oil.

I didnt have any problems initially, oil drained fine apart from dripping all over the under tray, got the fuel rail cover off, filter was a breeze to get off and replace. I did all this on a level surface with a shallow tray to catch the oil.

I read on here that the 172 mk2 needs a shade under 5 liters of oil. I poured in the whole 4 liters from the first oil container, waited a bit then got the small 1 liter container and poured in a third of that. I waited a while checked the dip stick, it was showing over the max by 1 cm. I thought, ah the oil needs time to get into the filter, so waited a but then started the engine and drove round the block. checked the dip stick and its still 5mm above the max on the dip stick. so its had only 4.3 liters and is over the max.

Should I drain some out or go for a longer drive. Is it damaging to have too much oil.

Leave the engine running for 5 mins. Then let it cool of for say 10 mins, check it then, if it's still over then drain a bit off. You'll probably be fine as it's only a small amount and tbh, the dipsticks are as much use as the oil display on trip computer! But too much oil can be as bad as too little.

you shouldnt over fill a engine, then again dip sticks are s**t anyway. i think you should be ok tbh, it doesnt sound drastic.
