Project: Liquid Yellow Megane R26 LUX

  LY Megane R26
After contemplating a new car for a while I got set on an R26 in either Glacier White or Liquid Yellow with the LUX pack to get the all leather seats, keyless entry/start and xenons.

A few came up for sale which seemed to eithet sell really quickly or I was always busy to arrange a viewing.
Then Steve @ R-Sports had just what I was after! Knowing Steve's history of car sales I knew it wasn't going to be a dog, so a deposit was paid and viewing arrange.

Next thing all my mates got talking about exhaust and prices etc when a mate bought a Milltek decat and down pipe for his mk6 GTI at £330 odd I think.
I then told them that for mine a full Milltek decat turbo back was only £648 according to K-Tec, which they all thought was really cheap for a full system. A few searches later demon tweeks had it for £570, after a bit of peer pressure and a phone call to demon tweeks stating I was a member on here I got it down to £555:) rrp is £505 for the cat back alone according to Milltek!
So basically I had bought an exhaust for a car that I had yet to see and only had a deposit on:)
We later realised why it's so cheap, the cost and hassle of fitting the damn thing, but more on that later:)

Viewed the car, was absolutely fantastic and Steve was a really nice genuine bloke.
There was a few little things that we discussed such as the budget tyres on the rear which I'm changing very soon as there not enjoyable in this weather!
Apart from that it was awesome and a deal was done with smiles all the way home for me:)

Coming from a stripped, bucket seats, coilovers and a small sabelt steering wheel in the Cup I do love the way the Megane is so comfy but can be driven quick when wanted!
I do miss the Cup but I think that's because I know it so well and the rear tyres on the Megane don't give me a lot of confidence in the bends.
As for speed I would say a standard Megane there's not a lot in it, in fact the Cup feels quicker because it's more of a race, low, hard, noisy car if that makes sense? Giving the feel it's faster.
But now the decat is fitted to the Megane I feel it would differently pull from it.
Fuel wise that's one thing I really miss about the Cup! I didn't drive it as a steady eddy but it still gave me at least 34/36 MPG, the Megane is more like 20/25 possibly 30 on a long run!

I am really happy with it tho and love the way it looks, the attention it gets and heads it turns:)

That was taken Sunday after a little clean.

Photo of mine and Rhys Beals (member on here) who came and viewed the car with me on the way home filling up as per usual;)
Lovely car that K1, it's on H&R springs, spacers and has a full Milltek decat turbo back fitted, pretty loud:)

Excuse the missing jack cover, he lost it on they way home!

As said earlier the exhaust I ordered got delivered the Wednesday after I bought the car that Saturday.

With not a clue what was involved in fitting it, we got it round a mates garage and onto the ramp.
After scratching of the head trying to work out how that cat was getting out from that engine bay I decided to look on the Megane forum and the general guide was offside hub off, drive shaft out, subframe loosened and then a wiggle and roughly a 5 hour job...Great!
After general banter about it being French etc and this put on Instagram it was booked in to get the exhaust on Friday.

During then I fitted some LED number plate lights and some for the interior.

Photos don't do them justice as the street lights where on but I love little touches like that.

Friday came round and the car was dropped off, 5 hours later the exhaust was on and the noise to me is so worth it!
This was the night it was fitted.

Needs a polish already!

This was the other night.

It's fairly quite when in the car tbh which I love, but window down and drive past a wall you can here it burble and spit etc.

These where taken the night the exhaust was on, excuse the dirtyness!

Really needs some lows after looking at these.

Sunday after a little clean I wanted to fit some LED sidelights to match the xenons and what a NIGHTMARE!
I refused to remove anything from the car so an hour later, cut knuckles and two LED's somewhere in the engine bay they where in!

Worth it in the end:)

One thing I hate about the car, and if your driven a Megane you'll agree is the hideous length of the gear shifts!
The throw between 1st and 2nd is so long it's like driving a lorry!
So over on the Megane forum everyone states the first mod and best money can buy is a modified short shifter.
With one ordered it came yesterday and I set about fitting it today.

Oh another thing I hate is the lack of room to work! But I got there in the end and it honestly is awesome! Totally transformed the car!
Changes are short any tight now, feels how it should!
Modified linkage, as you can see the ball has been drilled further in:)

And fitted

Thats it for now:)

Plans are:
Cooksport springs (currently out of stock!)
Spacers
OEM front mud flaps to keep muck and stone chips off the sides
Panel filter with air box mod or an induction kit
New cleaner number plates
R26.r spoiler
Forge recirc valve, hate dump valves on turbo cars like these!
Some fresh tyres and brakes ready for Sumertime:)

Not sure to go Stage 1 and play it safe or get a FMIC and a few other bits, injectors etc and go stage 2, we will see.

Thanks

That short shifter makes a world of difference don't they!

Makes me wonder why Renault gave the Meg such an awful gear change to start with!

Looks great :)

Go for Stage 2!

I'd recommend Goodyear Asymmetric 2's if you're after new tyres.

Also if you're after an induction kit the ITG is worth the money.

  LY Megane R26
Thanks Guys:)

Awesome Scott, didn't realise you were getting an R26 Always fancied one!

Get one Chris, you can pick some black ones up fairly cheap now!

I honeslty can't believe how much difference it has made! I heard its so bad so that the R26.r feels a little better, not sure if that's correct tho?

Looks great :)

Is yours stage 2 Tim? Running 270?
Not scared of that torque bending things as iv read anything over 300lbft isn't that safe?
What you got to get that power?

  LY Megane R26
I'm useless at project threads!...

Cut a long story short,
I got a pressure washer and snow foam for Christmas.
Awesome fun!

I applied a layer of AG HD wax before Christmas and then used some Hydro 2 to top up the protection, awesome product!

Came out one morning to this.

692A13F5-9F57-455B-9E7E-A7B0CBB66773_zpsyphdk5fz.jpg

Its still beading now but soon I'm going to decontaminate it and re apply some wax again.
As said tho, very impressed by the Hydro2.

I wasn't sure if I wanted an induction kit or do the airbox mod and buy a panel filter.
So I went to Rhys Beals who is a member on here with the Cupra K1 / Ph1 track car and bodged some pipe and a filter on to give me an idea of the sound.

C9DF83CF-6262-4529-9057-1B56C639A0E9_zps4hfahymi.jpg

Liking the sound I decided to make my own induction kit, basically need a 76 to 63mm reducer and a 76mm ITG etc, iv just got round to ordering the filter so I'll post that up when I fit it.

Bought the famous cooksport springs and set about fitting them, ran out of daylight so car spent the night like this.
Was scared I'd come out and have no Brembos left!

C97101AB-EA88-4363-8D6B-0B1FD7F49A06_zps1vgobxu8.jpg

Next morning, hungover, I finished it, don't think I'll do it again! The way the hubs are etc (forgot the name) are a PITA!
Also found that my near side front CV boot clip had come off, putting grease all inside the hub!
Cleaned that up and put a cable tie round that for a quick fix.

Few photos of it finished, but they don't look the best becuase the cars not straight and the fronts on a slight curb.
Very happy with the drop tho, looks awesome, still comfy and still handles like it's on rails.

Excuse the dirt car!

A few miles later I gained a knocking noise at the offside front when going over bumps, rough road etc.
I was dreading this a little bit as over on the Megane forums people have had knocks for months, changing bearings, lower arms, drop links even drive shafts and still haven't fixed it.
Jacked the car up and had a little play and noticed on the drop link the rubber had perished but there didn't feel to be major play.
Bought two lemforder ones anyway from ECP for about £15 each with discount, so fitted them.

All went smoothly, but noticed the cable tie on the CV boot properly didn't last more than five minutes!
Need to get that sorted asap but mate who owns a garage is not at work at the moment.

From when I'v had the car the tyres on it have never been that great, budgets on the rear and very warn Conti 3's.
Coming from a coilovered Clio with RSR's on 15" wheels I wasn't overly impressed with the handling, not so much the car more the tyres .
I bought 4 new NS-2R in the 180 compound after getting good reviews on here and the Megane forum, only paid £82 a tyre!
Very very impressed by these! Awesome dry grip once some heat has got into them and they preform just as well in the wet when driving to the conditions.
It's hard to say if there as good as RSR's as I'v only ever had them on the Clio so until I try them on the Megane I can't comment, but I wouldn't say there is much in it, plus these were over £30 each cheaper!

He bought everything to go stage 4, VXR turbo, charge cooler, booked it into Courtney to get in mapped etc etc.
Then his brother sold his WRX STI and bought a 2.2 litre supercharged VX, in red, with black pro race 1.2's!
Livid he's now took everything back off, canceled the mapping and it's up for sale as stage 2 again.
He's now put a deposit on an exige s2!

I think tomorrow I'm goings to flush through my brake fluid with some super blue, then maybe give it a detail and wax ready for summer.

More cleaning pics.

Lovely car! Exhaust sounds wicked for standard, handles like a go-cart! I love it! Yet to race it tho, but mine feels quicker to me.

I just want it clean and mechanically sound for Nurburgring at the end of the month :D
16 of us going in total, got two 8 person chalets, all very good mates, one stage 4 mk2 Focus RS, an E92 M3, Rhys stage 2 Cupra K1, a mk1 Golf cabriolet, a mk2 Golf GTI, a 6n3 Polo GTI and me, cannot wait!

Cheers, comments and criticism welcome!

  LY Megane R26
Thanks for the comments people.

You need metal clips for the drive shaft. If I were you I'd fit a rubber boot and clean the joint out.

Yeah I'm hoping to get it fixed soon with some fresh grease etc!

Very nice, got a link to the tyres?

Sorry mate should have said...
http://www.tyreleader.co.uk/car-tyres/nankang/ns-2r/225-40-r18-92y-247452

Gone up to £93 now which im happy about, you may not be lol.

Flushed through my brake fluid today with some super blue, all went swimmingly! Sorry no pics tho!
Pedel still hasn't got a great feel to it so next is pads and disc, it does brake well but kind of needs a good press, the initial bite isn't great!
The discs are kind of ridged and blue in colour so maybe a little glazed?
Think I'll go for Brembo HC and some decent pads, Carbotech XP8's get good reviews on megane forum, DS2500 not so much, maybe as the car is heavier?

Today I also snow foamed, cleaned, iron X'd, de-tar, clayed, polised with AF tripple (awesome product!) went to wax it with some AG HD wax but it's kind of gone funny in the pot and wouldn't spread on the car.
Thats kind of annoyed me so goong to try and not drive it, wash and polish it again next weekend and get hold of some wax.

Bit of an update,

Fitted some indicator bulbs that give off a bluey / orange colour, I dont know the name lol.
Bumper had to be removed to do so, standard!

Went for a drive on the bank holiday Monday to a little village 20 minutes down the road in Essex called finchingfield, the road to get there from my town is awesome! Think it was rated highly as one of the best driving road in britian in some motorbike magazine a few years back.
The pub was full of bikers etc as it always is.

The RS is Stage 4 at 400bhp / 400ft/lbs and hes just bought some 8pot K-Sports, hes a fabricator at Pro Alloy so comes in very handy, although they don't make an intercooler for the 230... yet!
The K1 is Rhys's from here, he don't post much anymore but its Stage 2 and hes just bought a pro alloy intercooler, LSD and SMF for it.

I was shocked at hell well the car held up against these two aswell as my friends E92 M3, obviously not in a straight line but around the bends I was more than happy how it performed!

Where all off out to Nurburgring next Thursday with a few other mates, cannot wait!

Ordered some pressed plates from eBay, not everyones cup of tea but I think they look good on the Meganes as I'v seen a few others on the other fourms run them.

Untitled by sah1503, on Flickr

As you can see I asked for no GB badge which is correct but the spacing is wrong and not centeral, I'm still waiting for another set to be sent out to me.

Finally got round to ordering my ITG filter, I then got the friend that worked at Pro Alloy to make me a 90 degree alloy bend, stepping down from 76mm to 63mm.

The plan was to run this from the turbo intake then use some silicon hose to join it to the filter.
This ended up miles to big as he mesured it in a rush one Friday night!

Settling for this,

Bloody tight fit in that engine bay so had to settle for the filter to be welded onto the pipe.

I began to fit it to the car, along with a CAF, oil + filter change ready for my trip to Leeds the next day!

Bit of a pain in the arse to reach the filter, I don't know how many people do these, looks like I would of had to take alot of things off to get to it, fuel rail etc etc.
Luckily I could reach it from underneath and undo it with my hand!

Day after all that, Tuesday just gone I set off at 6am and was in Leeds by 9:30

244 bhp standard running very lean apparently.
Paul settled with 266 bhp, very happy!
Feels so smooth, picks up a lot quicker, there great guys, well worth the trip!

He did say I had injector out and they was at a high Duty at the end of the rev range, which I kind of knew anyway as I noticed the famous cough from the exhaust a few days ago.

Mods incase anyone has missed it are

DIY ITG Induction
Miltek De-cat turbo back

I need some injectors, I don't know to go standard or go the intercooler and 630 injectors with a stage 2 map.
Car feels lovely at the moment, and its safe, but you soon get used to the power...

A few photos from the morning up there.

Book figure is 420 I think.
It had a map on it they didn't know who done and kept going into limp mode, put the standard map back on and still had problems when I left.
Paul said it needed a specalist porsche company to look at it really.

Carbotech XP8's, went for these as they get good ratings, apparenlty 2500 are not so good on the Megane due to they weight over the clio, it was either these or RC5+ but I got a good deal on the disc's so went for these.

Went up the "by pass" to bed them in and they feel awesome!
Miles better than what I had in there, I didn't do a fluid change becuase I done it a few weeks back before I bought these to see if that would make the ones I had in there before better, but it didn't.
I will do another change this weekend, it's only £10 a litre of super from ECP.

Weather was lovely when I got in last night so I changed my gearbox oil, I think Renault say its a non service item but I thought it couldnt hurt before Germany, and looks good in the service record.

Glad I did tbh!

Thats about it really, as said trying to get the car in tip top before 23rd when head out to Germany.

Ordered some BIMECC 20mm spacers from eBay with extended wheel bolts yesterday, they have just arrived so I'll possible get them on tonight and take some photos.
Got some 5mm coming for the front too, I didn't want to go to wide on the front as the sides get chipped enough as it is standard!

After them I think it just needs a good clean and its ready to go!

Cheers!

+1 actually.

I've been keeping my eye out for something boosted and I keep looking at these.
Scared to move away from problem free Japanese driving though. *touch wood*

Photos don't do them justice as the street lights where on but I love little touches like that.

Friday came round and the car was dropped off, 5 hours later the exhaust was on and the noise to me is so worth it!
This was the night it was fitted.

Needs a polish already!

Thanks
Were did you order the short shifter from mate?
