Quick Question RE fitting rear disks!?

Hello!

I put some new disks on today.

I refitted them correctly using johnny182's guide on here, refitted the small washer things off the original disks too..

My question is, when I was fitting the disks back on, I set my torque wrench to 175nm.

I kept tightening the 30mm nut and it started to get tight, I then heard a metalic kinda sound and the nut kept moving freely again, and then it tightened back up. I then heard the click of the torque wrench.

It did the exact same thing on both side? Both disks move freely ish (however I had to give them a bit of persuasion as they were well stiff).

My question is, have I broke anything or is this normal?

Luke

It started to get tight, then it went loose again. That sounds like your typical crossed thread, Although you'd have to be a complete mong to do that.

Should be alrate if it torque'd up, just keep an eye on it.

Edit : Who pressed the bearings into the disk?

Dave, they are Renault original items, so came with everything anyway, already on the disk. All I had to do was bash it on and bolt it up.

100% haven't crossed the thread either lol

Gray said it could be the bearing pushing its self into something. Didn't get him lol

I might take it back off tomorrow and double check everything.

I have got the whole caliper sat in vinegar ATM to give it a good clean up and a new coat of yellow paint  Shouldn't need to worry about the brakes afterwards - So long as I haven't broken anything LOL!

Riley, no disk wobble what so ever.

As your mate said, bearing may just not of been quite in properly, therefore when you tightened the nut it pressed it in that little bit more. It would only be possible for it to be about 1-2mm from being in fully mind other wise the circlip wouldnt go in

yes as this is what i stupidly done, i didnt realise this problem untill i felt wheel wobble a few days later and my abs didnt come on until a few days later either. I'd whip them off to check them if im honest with you.

i crushed one on one side and it was still enough to clear the hub from rubbing

Yep i thought i was carefull too but the exact same noise and the nut went free again..i thought thats not right but nipped it up abit more the above happend a day later.

If this is the case for you then you can get them from renault but they never keep them on the shelf so a couple of days to get them. i needed a quick fix so i got the old/but new bearing inner casing and machined that down to the exact measurement of the spacer on the otherside, works a treat but i just dont have the outer lip to seal the bearing on the inside.

This is a temp fix until i order 1 from renault of course

God sakes! Can't believe it :(, so if this is the case I need a new circlip thing and a new bearing?

You might just be ok without a new bearing if you've not driven the car. i done around 20-30 odd miles before i started to think if it was done correctly, this is when i gave the wheel a wobble and saw just that!

give it a tug it should come off quite freely. otherwise give it a tap with a rubber mallet

Disks wont budge at all :S Gonna have to leave it while tomorrow :(

Anyone got a picture of the "ABS" Sensor?

Haha, I spent last night doing the same job.

Except I've managed to snap a bolt and I'm car-less :dapprove:

If you look inside the hub. where the stub axle is, you can see the ABS sensor sticking out, it's the little black think with a few grooves in it.

The ABS rings generate current in the sensor, which is how it works.

I get it now. I don't think I have broke this - I can't hear anything moving about/rattling. Everything seems spot on?

Gray mentioned it could be the bearings pressing properly into the disk.... I think I will just refit everything and drive it. Worse comes to worse I need some new bearings and an ABS sensor.

Abs sensor hard to replace?

Right, I don't think its the abs sensor:

I remember when refitting the disk that I didn't want to catch that with the cogs on the back of the disk.

If its anything i would say that its the metal washer. Only the disk wont come back off now! :S

i did the same on one side mate - cracks the washer if its on the wrong way round. Think it was about £10 to replace.

i've done quite a few pal but never really payed much attention i just go in to auto pilot an build them back up how i find them. i'm pretty sure if you put them in back of disc/bearing assembly they should fit flush. If you get proper stuck drop me a line i'm off work tommorow an i aint got oat on. 07769 172677
