Update for those who take the time to read my sporadic rambles.

October 19 - January 2020

My boss kinda restarted this project as he found my hiding place for the car as he was looking to store some work related items, and found a engineless Clio in one of the storage trailers.

Removed from the trailer I was given a space in the warehouse to have it done before Christmas...

January 3rd 2020

Boss kicked me into gear for the second time, instructing me to actually get on with the job in hand.

I’d been storing the car at work and all the parts to rebuild it in the garage at the house. Bringing them all together at work I managed to bolt the 50k engine with the belts and dephaser done to the new Quaife equipped gearbox I had bought. After that initial progress I went ahead and bolted the engine into the car utilising the new PMS engine mounts. Finally finishing at 11pm, a solid shift on the car.

Been steadily beavering away most evenings an hour here and there. Should be back on the road for Feb all going well.

Couple of pictures to keep it all on record.

Still a bit to go, but it’s closer than it was. Managed to fairly drag my heels on what was actually a fairly simple task 🙄

Thanks again to @Djwjohn for coming to plug all the wiring in for me at 8pm On a random Friday at short notice.

January 2020 Pt Deux

Annnnd she’s back from open heart surgery. Taken much longer than it should have. Back on the road about 70 miles everything seems well. Much stiffer with the new engine mounts but liveable.

Going to continue to use and tweak it for the next couple of weeks and all going well I’ll book on track to give it a proper shake down.

Thanks as always to my ever suffering friends @Djw John & @Mickb for coming to help out as usual.

List of upgrades I’ve added.

  • PMS engine mounts
  • PMS 172 exhaust inc 182 manifold adaptor - ph2 bumper
  • New radiator
  • New rear shocks with powerflex mounts
  • Whiteline ARB
  • PMS Light weight pulleys
  • Low mileage Engine with lightened flywheel
  • Quaife equipped 182 gearbox
  • PMS shifter
  • corbeau revenge seat
  • Varley red top inc cage
All going well I’d like some coilovers to finish the car off and that’ll be about it modifications wise. Some of the brake pipes could be better as well so probably look to replace all of them for piece of mind. Obviously paint the rear bumper as well. It’s current 2 tone scheme isn’t ideal.

January 20 - February 2020

Quick month February was. Still running the car in and putting some miles on the new set up. Gave it a once over the other day and found some bolts that I managed a couple of extra turns on. Overall really pleased with it, feels a nice package and the bum dyno says it’s quicker than before.

I’ve booked a full day at Knockhill March 8th where I’ll be able to get a better opinion on all the “improvements”.

Gave the car another bolt check, exhaust & P/S rear shock bolt had managed to work itself loose. But otherwise everything seemed to be in fine fettle. Oil changed @ 150,910 & wash by @Djw John

8th March 5 hour OPL

28EC574C-B021-4DF2-BE30-D7C129F8D04F.jpeg

Used some credit I had with Knockhill and booked on for the full day OPL. Start of the day was wet with it drying up nicely in the afternoon.

Managed 99.7 on track miles before play was stopped.

AM wet sessions. I really enjoy the wet, and this outing was no exception. Was out passing things that I’d never be anywhere near if it was dry. The Quaife really makes a big difference, but it’s taking a bit of getting used to. PB Wet: 1.04.33

PM dry sessions. Car felt really different in the dry. Engine is very strong and again the diff makes the car feel much grippier front end, I’ll need to change the way I drive to get the best out of it I think. But more seat time should see my lap times come down a bit. PB Dry: 1.02.18

Play halted about an hour before the end of the day. I’d noticed a slight smell of oil the last lap and came into investigate. My little lad noticed ‘something slimy’ underneath when I stopped. This turned out to be gearbox oil. Packed up and away home in a huff.

Once back home and inspected I found the O/S driveshaft seal had eaten itself. Cheap at only £17 from RPD I’ve now replaced it along with another 3L of fresh Gearbox oil ( repaired & G/box oil change 151,068 )

I’ve done another 50 road miles since repair and everything seems to be in order.
I’m chocking it up as a win after all the work carried out over the winter.

Since the track day everything has gone a bit mad and the cars been put on the back burner for the foreseeable.

Stay safe folks. 💙💙

March - July 2020

Current mileage: 151,810

Been an odd few months, with not much doing anywhere. During the lockdown period the car mostly sat outside with the occasional wash.

Towards the end of lock down I started preparing the car for getting back on track. Spanner checks and topping up fluids, no real problems to report.

28th June - Knockhill’s first track day since 8th March. Slightly different experience than usual with temperatures being checked and social distancing being in place. I was invited along by a good friend to take his well specced Astra VXR along with his M4. Being a very wet day we used the Astra with it being shod with Pilot Sport 4s tyres rather than the M4’s Cup 2. Over all it was a pleasure to try something different on track with the added bonus of some boost to help it up the hills.

3rd July - Track day 2 since lock down. Took said mates M4 up for the improved weather while he took his Fiat coupe Turbo up ( lovely sounding car these ). Didn’t do any driving just passenger laps this time round. M4’s are fantastic when mapped and on dry roads/track any hint of dampness and it’s frightening. Unfortunately the Gucci AP 6 pots on the M have warped the discs and have now been sent back to the supplier for inspection.

6th July - Track day 3 since LD.

Back on track with the Clio - 3 hour OPL. Car feeling good and at home on track. I’ve not had the alignment done since I’ve bolted it all back together and it’s not as on point as previous track days. Managed 61 miles on track and managed a PB of 61.67 on the lap timer. Still trying to get used to driving with the Quaife diff which is night and day compared to the standard open one.

Improvements and upgrades - new sights set. I’ve decided after talking about it for years to compete in Super Lap Scotland at Knockhill. It’s a 6 round Time Attack style series that goes with power to weight. Chasing lap times should make things interesting. I’ve obtained my RS Clubman licence and fitted a couple of suggested modifications to the car to allow me to compete. First was swapping to wire tow loops, I’m not a fan of the look but the do serve a purpose. Secondly was the Cartek cut off - with the help of @djwjohn and @Mickb I managed to get this wired in and working.

The first round is the 1/2nd of August and I’m pushing things hard to be on the grid. It’s a steep learning curve, reading parts of the Blue Book has got to be one of the most boring things I’ve done but I’m very much looking forward to it.

I should be running in class F - but due to the Covid everyone’s P2W was cancelled. We’re running in our expected classes for Round1 and then for Round2 22-23 Aug we’re required to have the cars scaled and Rolled.

Anyway enough rambling on, if you’ve got this far then you’ve done well.

Thanks as always to @Mickb @djwjohn

9-5 Sessions day. I’m generally not a fan of the sessions. It’s too compact, too short and too much waiting about. But with the lack of track time available I decided to book on regardless.

Wasn’t overly feeling it but as the day wore on I started to get a bit more settled into the car. Feeling fairly strong still, the engine is a bit sooty so will be keeping a close eye on that going forward.

Wasn’t chasing times but steadily in the 62’s laps - total of 34 laps managed over the day.

Was using the last of a set of DS1.11 supplied by George @RTR. Managed to use all of them. Braking felt perfect right until the very end of the pad. Have ordered the same set up again, I can’t see anything being better than that. Always a great services from George, highly recommended.

85380748-81A6-4A5C-85E5-6BDED6FAB45D.jpeg

Couple of issues to rectify - ABS light on due to a bad passenger side rear sensor.

I’ve also ordered a few new bits for the step up to competing.

BC DS coilovers - track rod ends - bottom ball joints - RBF 600 fluid - DS1.11 and Brembo HC discs

Hopefully have this all fitted and the alignment done for the first round of SLS on the 2nd of August.

In preparation for my new BC’s coming I’ve fitted some new track rod ends and bottom ball joints. Unfortunately I’d ordered my suspension just a little later than expected so they wouldn’t be here for the first round of Super Lap.
I had my friend Stevie McNab set the car up with the string line for the first round and the plan was to drive it as hard as I could.

Super Lap Scotland Round 1

August 2nd 2020

Mileage: 152,057

First off. We made it! From delayed starts (FU 🦠) to delayed coilovers and wrong parts being delivered it’s been amazing just to be on the grid this year at all. Thanks to everyone that’s helped out over the last week or two getting the car ready.

Coilover delay. Mostly my issue, held off ordering over lockdown and ended up clicking the order too late. Stevie McNab to the rescue. I’d had fitted new ball joints and track roads and Stevie kindly aligned it with the string to perfection 🙌.

JH worked tirelessly on Friday afternoon to fit the freshly supplied DS1.11’s and Brembo HC discs supplied by George @RTR only to be beaten by an incorrectly dispatched ABS sensor. No ABS for this round and some 50/50 braking to contend with.

Myself and cousin Mark worked until after 10pm Saturday evening to sticker the car up. The main stickers supplied by our sponsor Void Designs in Armadale and Tracktion track days for the bumpers and names/numbers. On the trailer and ready to roll for Sunday.

We arrived at the circuit just before 12. With the help of John, Mick and cousin Mark the car was off the trailer and set up. A quick bite for the lads before we were out in warm up.

WU- first time in the car with the full safety gear on went well a good 10 laps in we managed a 7th (of 10) in class with a 1.02:717.

Nerves still high we went into practice.

On lap 8 of 11 I put in a stunning lap of 1:02:135 to put myself in 4th

Felt better going into qualifying, guys had adjusted the pressures a bit to try and reduce some under steer, nerves were a lot lower. Was pushing really hard and managed on lap 10 a 1:01:914 putting me into 3rd.

The final..

Nerves well and truly back. All my fast laps are generally well into the sessions so I’ll need to work on that, 1 lap dash no room for errors. Made a few mistakes started the lap off too slow, managed to throw a semi clean lap together with a time of 1:02:809 good enough for 6th in class.

Overall I’m glad I’ve taken the step into competition, it’s a completely different buzz from my usual track day’s and can’t wait to get back to it.
Bring on the next round 22/23rd August.
Thanks to all the sponsors for all their help.

August 2020 cont.

The second and third round of super lap Scotland fell over 1 weekend. This was no doubt fairly hard on the car, it was also hard on everyone envolved in getting me here. I appreciate the time and effort the boys go to help me out at each event.

SLS R2 results - reverse 22nd August

Well round 2 came around fairly quickly. Having installed my newly purchased BC coilovers and had them set up by race works in Livingston I was confident I could continue my good form from round 1.

Playing about over the sessions with different pressures and suspension adjustments had meant I was running well in 4/5th position. Running in third in qualifying I dipped a wheel onto the grass and it pulled me in coming over the top of duffus, sliding sideways towards pit entry I just managing to catch it and threw it into the pits. I retired from the session early for inspection but held 3rd for my efforts.

Finishing 4th in the final was a good result for my second Round.

5th in practice - 104:275
3rd in warm up - 101:196
3rd in qualifying - 101:743
4th in final - 102:373
