Really sh*t mpg - 1.4 8v - 25mpg???

Well ive thought for a while now that my car drank like a fish but simply put it down to my heavy right foot. However after going for a 160mile round trip most of which on motorways and a few other places ive used an entire tank of fuel.

I made a point of driving everywhere conservatively on this tank to see how many miles i could get out of it and with 2/3rds of the miles being motorway miles driven at 75mph average was surprised that i only got 220 miles from one tank.

Ive done the maths and it works out at an average of 24mpg. From a 1.4 this is quite obviously breathtakingly sh*t.

If someone wants to work out the mpg again and see if ive got it wrong feel free - ive done 220 miles on a 43 litre tank (which is taken from the clio manual)

If i have got my maths right however, could someone please tell me what might be causing this? - ive checked numerous times for leaks and theres nothing wrong there.

Any suggestions?

I get pretty poor mpg on my 1.4 as well, but have yet to find the cause. I had a lumpy idle but noticed that after re-fitting the cat (I had a decat before) this issue has gone so I'm wondering if it will help my mpg, but I've hardly driven it since re-fitting the cat so I'm not sure. Best place to start would be to replace the CTS and if that doesn't help try cleaning up the throttle body and replacing the air inlet temperature sensor. If that doesn't help, then I would suggest buying a cheap second hand lambda sensor (that is known to work) and try that.

I've not done all this on mine but I had intended to replace the air inlet temp sensor as I think thats where my problem lies.

i've chosen the completely disregard my fuel gauge. mainly cos it's s**t. it'll fly down to 1/4 tank and stay there for ages, then drop right down to nearly empty, it'll then run for at least another 20 odd miles or more.

But he's noticing this all the time, so there is a problem.

Ive just noticed somthing actually.

From my tank being nearly empty i put a tenner in and its taken it to smack on half a tank going by the fuel gauge. Whats wierd though is that the receipt from the petrol station shows only 10.6 litres has gone in. As 10 litres has given me roughly half a tank then surely the full tank cant be 43 litres like the manual says. Very odd. That of course would nearly double my mpg if the tank was half the size as i previously thought - making it much more reasonable.

my 1.4 8v seems pretty poor too but I'm too scared to see what it actually is lol and lazy.

yeah mate, a consistant drop would point to a problem, was just saying how unreliable various parts of our dear old clios are!

as regards tank size, when i got mine i ran it to near empty then filled it right up, see roughly how much it cost to fill it, worked out at around 30 litre

So why the fu*k do renault say its a 43 litre tank????

If its a 30 litre tank roughly then its closer to the 35mpg mark which is obviously much better

  Mk1 Ph2 1.4 RT !FOR SALE!
If my RT is nearly empty, and i put a tenner in, i can't dream of getting half full- lucky if i just scrape over a quarter

dude you get the same amount of miles to a full tank as I do, im just having to get used to it as cant find any problems at all.

^^ join the club, nailing it it'll go down to about 35 but you also have to take into consideration like air filters and decats, aftermarket shiznit

ive got the 1400 energy lump too, i'm well chuffed with mine.
its pretty thrifty. 10 quid = 10.4 l = 107 miles !!! or summin like that.
calculated to 49mpg

actually, i think the engine in my mk1 phase2 - 1400 8v Energy "E-type" was different from the one in the mk1phase3 1.4 RT, did they call it the D type or somethin? or am i thinkin of the 1.2's, there were shed loads of varients for them....

My 1.4 is poor imo as well. I was one of the first ones needing to refuel on the way to FCS from central Scotland and I was mostly in a convoy with RS'! Wasn't even caning it either!

Well if any of you have induction kits....I know mitch does it's probably that. Put mine on yesterday, my trip to work tonight that usualy shows little or no difference to the fuel gauge, took it from the last dot down to the red! :dapprove: And no, I wasn't just ragging the tits off it to hear the induction kit. I just drove as a normal drive to work. If it continues like that, as good as it sounds, I'll be taking it off.

I now get 40mpg on most tanks the way to do it is to brim it, run around for however long (till empty) and brim it again. That way you know the exact mileage and the exact amount of fuel it has used. My worst ever was 27mpg after sitting at 100mph for 3 hours!!

i have a 1.4 8v in my rt also, mines a 94.... will easy get 30 miles out of the tank when on red and that is with some ragging... my gauge is fooked seems like everyone elses is, if i drove normally and slow (which i dont tend to do) i reckon 100 miles to a tenner is easily reachable.... going to gie it a good service though soon, new air filter, oil filter, tinker with the tb etc...

runs sweet other than that, everyone moans about petrol consumtion in every car, you think it is going down more in yours than others, but it wont, sounds like a fooked gauge like mine! :)
