rear damper fitting HELP!!!

As above, fitting my koni dampers to the rear today, everything seemed fine until we tightened the top nut up, after which, when we put weight on the car the damper sticks up into the boot, providing no dampening at all.

I dont seem to be able to upload photos at the moment, but am trying.

Anyone had this problem with koni's?

i think someone else was having this bother the other day. have you got a washer and a rubber bush on both sides of the turret? (i.e. under the car as well as in the boot)

JME what actually fixed yours?

On mine I have, starting at the top...

nut
washer
washer
rubber bung
car
rubber bung
washer

and there is a circlip on the strut about 4 inches down, but that keeps coming off when i tighten the top nut up.

Putting the standard ones back on.

I was missing a rubber bung from underneath, didn't even notice when fitting them! The standard ones won't fit on so I've put the std shocks back on lol, sorry this has been no help at all.

check the inner diameter of the washer under the car - presumably it's too big and is allowing the damper rod to pass through it. there should be a lip on the rod that the washer sits on

there is no lip on the rod, it has a circlip about 4 inches down but thats it.

Does anyone have a picture of what you are suppose to get when you buy them new please?

it did this to me when i fitted my fk's. on the rod you should have something like a rubber ring, copperplate that stops the damper from moving up into the car, another copper bullet with rubber protector which goes inside the boot that connects to the copper ring below then a cup and bolt on top. hope this helps

I did a little sketch for you, it goes something like this:

Please use this as a helping hand as i cant remember 100% if this is correct

itl be the circlip if the rest is built up correctly! i had the same hasstle with my old mk2 golf! the circlip stops the shock from poking up through the boot! if it fails then theres nothing to stop the shock coming through!

unfortunately once mine slipped it wouldnt get its strength back so i just bought 2 new rear shocks.

cheers adam, i dont have a copper insert, but i have everything else, i dont think the konis come with the copper insert, it just uses the circlip to stop it cming up through the boot, as Iceberg 172 says. gonna give it another go today, see if i can get it to fit without the circlip slipping off, if not im fooked.

cheers again lads
