Red Ph1 1.4 Si

Back in another Clio. I'm always keeping an eye out as would love another Ph1 172.

This popped up on Gumtree a site I don't check that often but having the flu I had extra time. This car was posted the same day and being nearby I managed to go and have a look and purchased later on the same day.

Some brief detail it's a 2000, W plate one owner 1.4 16v Si and it's done under 23,000 miles.

The back story was the guy selling it got it from a garage who got it from a breakers, it was technically due to be crushed/broken.

Bit of an odd set up but I have the V5 unfortunately no other paper work. Although 2 keys.

The car really is immaculate. The arches, like new along with the interior which smells it. Couple small dings on the rear quarter and a few small scratches.

Early days but not really sure why I bought it or why I need it. Couple options.

Sell my Saab 93 which is my daily and use this.
Or
Wife needs to learn to drive, good starter car
Or
Brother needs car but doesn't seem bothered
Or
Go back to 100% original, geek out on original dealer plates, alloys, trim etc
Or
@Djw John suggested making it a Ph1 Trophy. Oh so tempting. Seats alone would be more than the cost of the car!

I'll get more detailed pictures. Weather has gone crap again here. To really geek out I have now put the Clio in a carcoon. I had this ready for putting the V6 in but I store this elsewhre and it's currently SORN. Picture of the V6, why not.

I'll try and keep this thread up to date if of interest. Today I done some digging, sad I know.

The car was MOT'd just in August so I went to the testing garage, they said they had MOT'd it for the past few years but nothing else to really tell me. Sure he said it needed an exhaust in 2016/17. I'll get a picture of it /under the car, it still looks new.

I then went to the address on the V5. Not sure if this is allowed but sadly nobody in, double garage noted however.
I then visited a car dismantler. First one was the wrong place but I got a side repeater for my Saab for £3. Second place was where the car came from. The chap explained the owners daughter dropped it off as sadly the mum had cancer they just wanted rid.

I'd love to have found out more especially with the add ons but I won't be looking into anything further.

I did try Renault, after giving details I was on hold for 15mims to be told they don't have info. Only takeaways was that it was purchased on the 13th of May 2000 and the original plate is W886 UOA. No plate change on the V5 but it was reissued in 2013 so assume change of address. It does have the original key rings. Renault Solihull.

Only issue I have come across is that it is hesitant when starting from cold. Needs a few blips of the throttle. Needs looked into but other than that it's spot on. I'll likely look at getting it serviced/checked over.

Anyway apologies for the lengthy thread!

I never even thought until John mentioned it. Colour is spot on. All good thanks, hope the same 👍

What would we need....
182 Trophy alloys
Recaros
Ph1 172 bumpers, wings, skirts
Coilovers or would sachs fit?
Trophy spoiler
Oh and engine, gearbox, brakes.

This is really sad but I still have (somewhere) the exhaust from my first car, my 1.2 16v Billabong. Can kick about the local waterfront once more 😂

Very doable mate, i reckon you could probably do it for about 4-5k? Unsure on the Sachs but i’m sure someone with better knowledge will be along to say for sure!

Few more photos today until it started chucking it down, again. Only issues I have come across is that it can be hesitant to start from cold, either cuts out or doesn't sound like it's firing on all cylinders, couple of seconds later it kicks into life.
Bloody locking wheel nuts are not coming off.
Exhaust is leaking ever so slightly from the clamp from the backbox onto the centre pipe.

Other than that it seems very clean. Nice to not have a sticky dashboard.

Still deciding what to do as it's currently not taxed. I'll likely look at getting it serviced/checked over.

Any garages in Scotland people would recommend?

Very tidy that! they are common for ignition coils going on them which can cause it to misfire. reasonable priced on autodoc

Is it a K4M in this?

My 1.6 used to eat through them. Always had a spare few in the boot for when they failed.

Thanks that is useful to know.

Not related but do you have any of the following.
This generation of alloys for a Ph1, think the ones on the Si are called Stella alloys.
Black, standard spoiler
Boot lid handle/switch
Door handles

Or anyone else that may have these things :)

  Clio 3 1.2 Extreme
Good find, and way too good to crush. Presumably change belts, water pump and gearbox oil if you decide to keep that engine in it.

Nice one:)

Getting the water pump to seal on these is such a pain in the arse I'd personally run it till it pops then F4R it.

Which seems extreme but I'm ok with it as it's not my money 😂

I'd think so. Obviously ill to assume but I think it has been very well looked after. The belts look fresh, not a 20 year old belt surely. Good battery in it, filter looks good. Just a shame no service book probably lying in a drawer somewhere destined for the bin.

Any thoughts on looking after the underneath, in terms of sealing etc? Ideally wouldn't look to cover it in that black tar stuff.

Still not sure what to do! 😅

Looks great, by the way, were the foglight surrounds only colour matched on non-172s? Pretty sure those would be black on the 172?
Also the door handles are colour matched, I thought only Ph2 Clios ever had those, unless they were sprayed afterwards?

Common starting issues/stalling on these 1.4 16vs is a simple fix

Clean the throttle body out, bolted right at the back in the middle.

Will run like a trooper, used to be forever cleaning them out when i was a Renault tech back in the day.

Not a huge amount to report @Martin_172 . I met @Stu. from Renomotive. What a set up. So I picked up a rear boot lock, door handles and a dashboard. I'm putting the one from this car onto my V6 then the one from Stu onto this. The one on V6 was just way to sticky, think it's the cleaning products I've been using over the years.

I changed the boot lock but still need to get trim tools for the door handles.

Unfortunately Stu didn't have a matt black spoiler from your boggo Mk1/2 he had one but it's the much smaller one.

My Saab is going for it's MOT later this month. Trying to decide then what to do, couldn't really justify taxing the two so the little Clio has remained in its carcoon. We get a lot of tree sap this time of year, bloody annoying so best place for it.

Thanks @Alastair. I'll have a look at that.

Aw man, first refusal please 😂
Haha noted. I genuinely love just jumping in it and how simple it all is. Smells great aswell 😅

Was also trying to get some retro plates made for it. Need to chase that up.

I know what you mean. Everytime I get in my base model 1.2 it puts a smile on my face, despite only having 75 bhp :)
