Remap standard ECU or get SMT6???

MCG

  Vauxhall Astra VXR
I already have a de-cat, free flowing exhaust and panel filter installed on my 182. I am going to get inlet manifold matched and cams from GDI. They advertise that as they are just fast road cams, they will work with the standard ECU as long as I get the fuelling remapped. What is the difference between remapping the standard ECU, or will it be better to get an SMT6 engine management system on this kind of setup. Any help will be appreciated.

and what gains do you see from this setup remapping the standard ECU?

IMO mapping std ecu for work such as exhaust & filter..
if you're having other work's done, I'd go for the SMT6

I wouldn't bother with the SMT6 matey....listen to Paul he knows his stuff, he mapped my mates 172 a month or so ago, running ktec cat back, janspeed decat, maxogen, matched inlets and it flys!! IMO the RS tuning remap is better value for money!!

Definately remap the standard ECU.

Unless you are planning on some wild cams in the future (I am not sure if the SMT would cope with them anyway?)

I know someone who had the SMT 6 on there 182:(

  EK9 + Mfactory gearing..
i have smt6, personally i would remap the standard ecu as far as you can go. if you are going to tune further eg tb's you would be better off with the omex, its only a fraction more cost wise.

How much is a standard remap? I had my Pug 307 HDi done with staggering results but it was over £400 from Celtic Tuning.

I was looking to get the 172 done when my exhaust is fitted so that i get a better hit from the filter and exhaust combo.

Mark what do you run on yours?? ^^

I have an OMEX ECU, most of the time I wish I didnt, lol.

I will be getting throttle bodies before the end of the year so the OMEX is required.

You will get far better results on a turbo car, diesel or petrol, then N/A.

Ah gotcha...tho with the omex you can change the map as much as needed for new mods you've done....you run a single throttle body conversion jus now dont you??

Its got cable throttle rather then fly by wire so its mapped off a throttle position sensor.

You can map the car live (engine running) I am not sure if they can do that on the standard ecu yet.

When I had it done the only way to run cable throttle was by standalone management. There is a conversion availble now that uses the standard ECU which I would have gone for given the choice.

Like everything there appears to be mixed views on how good the SMT units are. They have their limitations. Stand alones are only for the hardcore lot.

ECU mapping is the way forward imo

as above....smt6....waste of money if u ask me....too limited to get decent results.

only 1 guy to see imo.....will be a new cup on the block with the masters mapping on board end of this week i believe. will have to see how that goes b4 and after but im expectin a good increase

^ did yours not have an r sport?

if so why the change mate?!

If your running the stock injection system, and so long as the cam profile doesnt have too much overlap, then remapping stock ecu is the only choice, the ability to fine tune and actually correct areas is lightyears ahead.

  GDI ???BHP Cliosport172
when i had my ecu remapped i only saw increase of around 6hp but the improvement over the whole car was very good, better torque&power curve throughout the rev range.
Just had cams fitted but the car is running sh*t! Either the ecu programme isnt set up properly or the cams are fake! lol

lol We shall see looser ;)

I had the rsport but it seemed to loose its original increase (proven at York) It`s now about the same as it`s best but with 182 mani and afew other small extras. Had my rsport checked at RS tuning and it was almost identical to std so the only thing I can think of is it has been reset somehow by renault...maybe when the new engine was fitted.

This has been confirmed but the fact that I am now running std ecu and it is pretty much identical performance wise. Heard and seen many good things about Wayne of saxo, pug Vag sites and they all seem to get great improvements. As ben said he`ll be able to get it spot on for my car with the mods it has rather than the rsport which, as good as it is, is still only a general map
