Removing engine cover

I've searched but can't find the answer to my question!

I'm trying to get my engine cover off but the bolts seem ridiculously tight. The engine is hot though as i've just driven the car - maybe it'll be easier once it's cooled down and the metal contracts? I tried using a screwdriver with a T30 bit - it fits but I can't get enough torque on it to remove the bolts. Do I need to use a wrench instead? Not got one here but can borrow one.

Oh and it is just the 4 visible bolts on the top yeah?

Thanks.

its probably best to use a wrench mate, i had to grease mine before removing as they had been on for some time. and yes, only 4 bolts, two top and two bottom mate

Ok I'll get hold of a wrench at some point then. I thought they may be a tad looser because the engine cover has been removed recently for some work but the garage must have tightened them back up pretty well

yeh some people proper tighten them to stop the engine cover rattling when driving, a lot of people just remove them as they arent really need them. And to save weight haha

I want to remove the engine cover from a friend's 172 but one of the bolts is kinda damaged from previous attempts. not sure what to do now :(

don't really wanna leave the rest inside. one of mine snapped inside (hence the removal of my cover) and couldn't get the damn thing out (tried to drill through what was left of it but no success)
