Renault 182 Cam Belt and Aux Belt Quote

Hi there,

I have just had a quote to change the Cam/Aux belts (nearly 5 years old) from my local Renault dealer in Germany and they have come back with €1196.83 (approx £1040!) attached as pdf, which includes a replacement water pump as they said that 80% of the time the water pump needs replacing and you may as well do it when you change the belts.

This seems extremely steep to me. Does it look about right from a main Renault Dealership? My options over here are pretty limited compared to you guys in the UK. I'm even thinking of driving back and getting the work done in the UK.

Thoughts?

Many thanks

They are looking at doing you dry mate, are you never in Bristol as per your details?

Now and again. I have e-mailed SJ Cook and Sons for a quote. Let's see what they come back with. Do they have a point about the water pump?

That is the same price it costs to get done in an Irish Renault Dealer also. :dead:

Not sure if they changed the aux belt or not....is it essential then?

Thanks

Fred will correct me if I'm wrong, but the majority if major engine failures I've seen on here have been aux belt related. When the come off/break they wrap around the cambelt and cause that to snap/come off. So even if your cambelt is brand new, your old aux belt could still f**k you over!

can you do the work in a day fred?! (so waiting with the car) what is there to do at your place while waiting for the work to be done??! :)

yup and REALLY DUMB to reuse! you sould fit a FULL aux kit, not just a belt

Ill have to give them a call and ask...Ive just checked the receipt and it says cambelt kit...So its probably has been done.

Whats making me think not is i only paid £175.

How? Cambelt kit £140 plus vat, Aux belt kit £118 plus VAT, water pump £60 (ish) plus vat?

£318 plus vat for parts before any labour? even the parts at trade wont be massively cheaper!?!?!

How come the Renault Garage in Germany is charging:-

Cam Kit = €318 ex VAT
Aux Kit = €277 ex VAT
Water Pump = €94 ex VAT
Plug & Cover (whatever that is?) = €15 ex VAT.

I would have thought Renault would charge the same price for parts throughout Europe (EU and all that?) obviously not!!

Plug and cover are cam seals, they dont come in a renault kit, so you have to pay extra!!

Not sure why you have to pay more pal?? Dunno how much postage would be to you? i could post you the parts if needs be!

SJ Cook and Sons have quoted me £573.27 ex VAT to replace Timing and accessories belt and water pump. That sounds more reasonable to me. Any folk out there had any recent good experiences with them? I used them years ago for my R5 GTT service (seemed ok then).

Cheers

My mistake. The price is £573.27 inc VAT! which is much cheaper than the £1040 ex VAT that I am being quoted over here in Germany. Right a long drive back to Bristol it is then....

Are you not going to factor in:
- time
- petrol
- food & board
- ferry/eurotunnel

Those included you'll save relatively little over the UK prices and you would have to wonder is it worth the hassle? Any RenaultSport specialists much closer to you in France?

I have and its still cheaper, plus I get to go on the razz with all my old Bristol mates on the weekend.

Take your point though, I think that Renault Europe just rip you off and their economy is not in such a bad way compared to UK so they still charge full whack on prices.
