Replace cambelt

  Vectra MSD
Just found this text describing how to replace a cambelt... :

--
First you need to locate the alternator just under the cam belt, drivers side bottom of the engine. From here theres 2 bolts up the top which need to be removed so the alternator can swivel thus loosening the old belt, remove the old belt, put new one on and pull alternator back so new belt is tight. Then redo bolts and hey presto. You may need a second person to hold the alternator tight to make life a bit easier.

Is this right?
I thought the cambelt was hidden out of view?

Exscuse me if these are dim questions but i know very little about clios (1.2 1996/7)

Thats the simple guide for the Aux belt on Clios, The cambelt on Clio only drives the cams, the Aux belt driver all the pumps and alternators etc.

Thanks, thought it seemed a bit simple, is there a how to guide on changing a cambelt?
Just looking for a rough idea of whats involved...

The cambelt is a little more tricky, if its the D7F engine though its not that hard compaired to the other engines. There is a guide in the Haynes manual.

No dissraspect to you, but if from your text you could not realise it was for a aux belt not a cambelt, I wouldnt advise you take on the work yourself.

Well on the engines im used to you can clearly see where the cambelt goes, on this 1.2 it doesnt look like theres enough room for a cambelt on the end of the block and theres no cover, hence my comment. If you read the OP you will see that I doubted the information I found, thats why I asked here :)

I understand that you doubted the information, but for anyone who has a good mechanical knowledge, they would read the guide above and compleatly wright it of as NOT being a guide for replacing the cambelt.

Best advise is to buy a Haynes and have a good read of that, I have replaced the cambelt on this engine before(few years back now) and if memory serves me correctly it isnt to bad(certianly easier than it was on my Valver)

I considered doing mine myself but in the end I paid my loacal garage to change the cam and aux belt for £120. Make sure they get the proper renault cambelt kit in for the car which includes a new pulley.

The whole story is a just bought a clio with a broken engine as the cambelt snapped. Was looking at putting a belt on and turning over with a spanner to see if i hear anything i shouldnt. If i do, then slap in a 2nd hand engine or maybe pull the head off and if its just valves, change the head kinda thing.

Will be getting a haynes manual and I am in Southampton

Just get a new engine if the belts gone then the valves are likly to be broken its not worth even taking the head off to check IMO.

Is there a way of visually seeing if the belts gone. Just had a good look and it appears theres no water in the resevoir or rad. Apparently it just died on the motorway at 50mph and the previous owner assumed it was the cambelt. Just curious if theres an easy way to confirm its the belt
