replacing my 1.416v with a 1.6 16v

  www.renparts.co.uk
Instead of doing any performance mods to my 1.4 ive decided im going to replace it with a 1.6 engine. Dont start going on to me saying it will be same price to drop a 172 lump in as i don't want to have to replace the suspension and i would most probably kill myself with that much power and would need to replace my clutch etc.
Would like some advice really, if i were to replace the engine with a 1.6 would i need the ECU? could i use the same gearbox? Basically i would appreciate a parts list. I have access to a cat d 1.6 which is been broken you see so parts are all there cheaply. Would possibly look into doing the engine drop myself.
so advice and a parts list would be appreciated.
thanks

Well you'll probably need the gearbox as the 1.4 uses the JB1 box and the 1.6 uses the JB3, would have thought renault did it for a reason.

The 1.4 and 1.6 engines are the same engine but with the 1.6 having a longer stroke to get the extra 0.2l, apparently the later 1.6s (11/02>) have the VVT too so you'll probably need the ecu if it is one of the later engines.

Not sure what else but if you've got access to a complete car then i'd just take everything, you can always sell it on later if you don't need it.

yeh i mean ill probs have the box anyway. Least when it comes to selling the car icould take it back to standard. It doesn't involve actually rewiring the car does it? Just replace the ECU with the new one.... So after 02 plates they were VVT?
thanks

Well the haynes manual says the later model K4M engines had vvt and doesn't give a date or anything, i've assumed that as the >Nov 02 1.6s were in grp 8 instead of 10 and have a book mpg of 39 instead of 40 that that was when then changed not 100% sure though.

is there a noticable difference in power then? from the 1.2 to the 1.4 and what advantages does the VVT have?

On the K4J and early K4M engines, the camshaft sprockets are both conventional, however, on the later K4M engine the inlet camshaft sprocket incorperates a phase-shifter which provides variable valve timing by advancing the inlet valve timing during certain operating conditions. The phase-shifter is activate by the engine management ECU via an electronically-controller solenoid valve located on the top, right-hand side (from drivers seat) of the cylinder head.
Make of that what you will.

Having never driven a 1.4 I couldn't compare but its a rocketship compared to my old 1.2 16v, what I have noticed is that it never really comes on cam like my old 1.2 used to. That used to very noticably pick up after 3k, this on the other hand just pulls from pretty much anywhere and just keeps on pulling till the limiter, could be the VVT there but having never driven an early engine such as one in the old Mk2 Ph1 RSI I can't really compare or be definete, all I know for sure is that it sounds f****** awesome when your giving it some.

Get brilliant economy too, managed 230 miles from £20s worth of optimax this week with 40miles to go on the trip, works out to an average 50mpg :D it. I drive it moderately steady but it still sees a bit of cane so I was very impressed, used to get about 30-35mpg from my old 1.2 .

good stuff. ill definitely be giving it some thought over the next few weeks and see how much its going to cost. thanks for the help. I would appreciate a parts list still if possible.
thanks

Forget it its expensive. You'll need your stock ECU remapping and a looms making to make it workjk then you'r best using the JC3 box as thats what Renault did so you should need the JC3 driveshafts as well you'll need to get it all to work.
If you don't remap so the 1.2 ECU runs the 1.6 (it can be done since there the same ECU's) you'll ned a new ECU or swopping the UCH and keys ffrom the 1.6 doner car.

Not worth it realy go for a 172 or nothing.

1.6 is a good upgrade from a 1.2 but i wouldnt think its much of an upgrade from a 1.4, its only got 10bhp more, got a bit more torque tho, im thinking of puting one in my 1.2 next year.

its a better base to start from tho if your going down the engine mods route, id say go for it! be different!

  172 cup'd extreme
i thought about replacing my 1.2 with a 1.6 and when i worked it out it wasnt much more to stick a 172 engine which i did . unless you can find a cheap engine loom etc then go 172 or nothing

Well i've been driving it like a girl then , with the extra poke over the 1.2 I don't feel the need to cane it so much I guess. And that 75% is country lanes so just cruising at 60 for most of it, not a lot of stop/start town driving.
