Robbing b******s

  BMW 323i Coupe
Just been to Renault, and they've booked me in for a week tomorrow. So much for Renault minute where they'll fit you in. They want me to pay £82 to have a bloody diagnostic check, £82!? That's daylight robbery.

Renault Cardiff.

I have just been down to a place in Newport called TWA Autoelectrics, they said they can fit me in today so I've left the car with them, and they are charging me £35.

I've just spoken to my next door neighbour and he said if they want to charge me something steep, then he will do it for me cheaper.

Renault are getting a letter of complaint.

I bought a similar diagnostic tool for £25 delivered a while back. Used once and it more than pays for itself.

Daylight robbery FTFL!

EDIT: That link looks weird, I'm using Google Chrome, don't know if that's why.

Aye but they will be using something a bit more advanced than that. Its not like Ren Cardiff are short on diagnostic equipment so strange they're charging more than others!

If its just a clip test you want, and a fault code printout then usually they charge half hours labour. If they're gonna look into the fault further then they'll charge an hour, which is fair enough.

Picked the car up. Here's the report.

"Vehicle brought to us with EML on and poor performance. We code read engine management system. Code DF114 showed misfire on cylinder 4. On further inspection we were unable to remove the spark plug from cylinder 4. Spark plug must be ...(can't understand the guys handwriting for this word)... before any further tests can be carried out."

Basically they said that the spark plug has been rounded off, and is impossible to move. Since going to a garage, I've been told that this may now be rusted, and if they try to remove it, it can snap, fall into the engine, and I'll be looking at £800 - £900 on removing the cylinder tops.

I have two options.

1. Fix it. Although I don't have the money to do this.

2. Voluntary surrender the car's finance - Give it back, debt's wiped off, and I get a bad credit rating. Which would lead to me buying a cheap run around.

A rounded off plug?? weird. On the 1.2's the rubber end of the plug lead gets stuck on the spark plug, it feels like the socket is just spinning. Something to check for

Re: Robbing b*****ds

Some help please.

The orange light to the left of the petrol light has come up in place of the other light. It is a box with lines up and down through it, and then a curled line under it. What does this mean?

I've tried loading a photo but no luck.

preheating/electronic fault or water in the diesel warning light
(thats how its worded in my book)

preheating - it goes out as soon as teh engine is preheated and the engine may be started

electronic fault/ or water present in the fuel. contact renault asap.

So they could potentially be making £984 an hour on labour alone. Amazing.

So would that just mean propping up the rubber to have a clear way of removing the spark plug?

You better have a look at that spark plug mate. Take the HT lead off and then look at it, try put a socket on it and see if it grips, dont turn it but just fit it. Ohh needs to be a deep socket too.

Just see if the renault guy is taking crap first.

HT lead should pop off, pull the end closest to the spark plug (should be a wider section, dont pull the small bit of the lead) and pull up, should make a pop sound or come off.

Check the Spark then.

I didn't see the Renault people, the guy that did the testing in my local garage told me about it. They said they couldn't get it off, but now I'm wondering if that was the case.

The missus' mother knows a good mechanic so she's going to introduce me to him tomorrow, I don't have any tools, so I'll leave that until tomorrow and pray for the best.

Thanks for the advice though.

Always carry tools with you, also i suggest you get some basic tools for taking parts off the car and for basic repair.

Reanault = daylight robbery, no matter what they do! They think we are all mugs that are willing to pay the first quote they pluck from the air...

Why not just take the head off yourself? Or a local garage could do it?

Take the plugs out, replace what's needed etc.

Handing it back seems extreme!

Went to a local garage today and he said that aslong as the car's not misfiring I shouldn't worry, and that if it does misfire, to get it back to him as soon as possible, but for now the car is fine. :)
