Rob's 1995 Impreza WRX STI Type RA

  Impreza RB5 #054
I bet you enjoyed yourself in Heol-y-Cyw, nice car, seen it being driven round a lot and I think I've spoken to the owner a few times, is he a sparky?

Please remember the first rule of Subaru ownership, always tell people the full name and model, trim level when people ask. I.e Subaru Impreza WRX STI type RA MY94

Some fantastic roads over there mate! Very jealous!

The chap's name was Matt. Not sure what he did for a living, but he said he commutes to London and stays there for the week... (not in the Impreza thankfully!)

I'm getting fairly bemused looks from non petrol heads when I explain what a Type RA is! 😂

Just tell the uninformed that it's an angry rally car.

Spent most of this afternoon with a flat blade, tar & glue remover, and a s**t load of blue roll... Whoever fitted those limo black window tints need shooting!

They had to go... Personally I'm not a fan of tints especially on a car like the Impreza, mine had also warped on the rear screen due to the heating element which gave me no vision out of the rear window whatsoever!

The car looks much better for it. (no photos because it's pitch black now)

I've also replaced all my bulbs as they were all fairly tired, and upgraded the H4's with a some 'Osram Nightbreaker Unlimited' which IMO are one of the best halogen bulbs you can get.

The black radiator grill badge has also gone, in favour for the cerise pink JDM 'I' version.

Productive afternoon giving the Impreza some TLC!

Nothing quite beats that first detailing session after buying a car.

Removing the tints has made a huge improvement in my opinion. Hopefully I will receive my new downpipe next week, as the slight exhaust blow is driving me mad!

After Christmas I'm going to get hold of a secondhand front bumper and make it fit round the intercooler then get it sprayed.

I'm also on the hunt for a pair of genuine tear drop WRC door mirrors as that really will just finish off the exterior!

Be careful when you have the flap open mate, I've heard of the plastic bit breaking and the flap going back and hitting the roof.

I only have mine open under 50 mph ish.

Crap!

That's handy to know mate cheers! [emoji23]
Dreamy.
As sad as the demise of the gorgeous trophy was.... This brilliant impreza more than makes up for the loss imo.
Keep up the good work
Thanks Dan that means a lot.

I've only owned the Impreza for a week but already feels like it was the right car to buy and a worthy replacement to the Trophy.

Really looking forward to getting our 2 cars together mate.

As I said via PM it was a classic RA I originally wanted.
Such a lovely car mate, so glad you bought it.

Have you had any rear end excitement yet?

Same mate. The pair of them together will make for some decent photos I reckon.

I've had the back end step out on me once which was quite fun... That was with the DCCD set to fully open.

I'm still trying to get my head round the DCCD if I'm honest. Trying to workout what each adjustment does is basically down to trial and error.

This first time I went to park the car with the DCCD towards the top I shat myself when the diff sounded like it dropped out from under the car! [emoji23]

I don't have DCCD mate and I don't even have standard diffs.

My car sounds broken all of the time, when I turn at slow speeds the inside wheel drags and scrubs...lol

By far the best Scooby made - IMO - I have had 2 - early one WRX running 389bhp and then an STi running 365bhp. Loved the WRX and was soooo quick. However the STi with the longer gear ratios was superb and it was a fully prepped track car - wish I never sold either but hey ho....

Beautiful car.Always loved the Sti Ra.

Think I need to get one of these while they are still affordable.

For anyone thinking they drive the same as any other classic Impreza...think again

The DCCD transforms these cars. The roof vent just adds to the absolute cool-ness.

Look forward to seeing plenty more pics of this one.

Cheers Jon!

I'm over the moon with the car, and looking forward to getting it out on track to really see what it's capable of.

In the meantime however the grin factor out on the road is hard to beat!
How much are these now, still decent money?
There's not many for sale at any one time mate. Currently I think there's only 3 for sale in the country of the regular Type RA's like mine but that's ignoring the other RA versions like the '555' or 'V-Limited'

Either way your looking at 6k upwards.

On the road they sure make you smile mate. [emoji106]

Every round about is like a Christmas morning when I was about 10. [emoji23]
Even now I still get excited about driving it.

It's such a laugh mate, and it's a real joy to drive an 'older car' compared to my daily which is a 63 plate Seat Leon (it's a fantastic car just does nothing for the soul)

The RA on the other hand is just a tool for driving nothing more, and I love it! Such a raw driving experience. Cannot wait to attend all sorts of events etc next year, and put all my plans for the little import into practice!

As for the noise... I'd be lieing if I haven't switched the anti-lag button on a couple of times! (I know it's no good for the turbo) and of no real use for normal driving but the NOISE! I'm going to upload a video just to show you what I'm banging on about.

Yes I'm a massive chav.

For sure mate!

We can a pair of Subaru w*****s together! [emoji23]

Rally Day 2017 is a must, but there's loads going on bud.

I'd also like to attend Cliosport Festival next year. Especially if it's at Blyton again as the last two years have been bloody awesome!

I thought that Rob's estimate was a bit low.
When I was looking type r was about £8k.

I was just basing my estimates on the fairly sorry looking examples currently for sale... They definately need some TLC!

And I did say upwards! [emoji6]

I went out in a type r years ago, used to be a 'specialist' not far from where I used to work. The low down acceleration was brutal

The down-pipe really was in a poor state! I'm unsure of the brand as it is indeed a de-cat pipe, but it's not stainless steel as it's so badly corroded and the metal itself is magnetic which is a sure sign of mild steel! It's design was also pretty poor as half of the flange going onto the turbo was blanked off which surely wouldn't be a good thing? Compared to the replacement pipe which has a better design and is much less restrictive.

Upon replacing the down-pipe we noticed that there was a fair amount of movement at the turbo... Further investigation found the stainless steel aftermarket up-pipe has a large crack at the flange just before the turbo, allowing it to open and close like a bloody sock puppet!

Obviously this is less than ideal, so after speaking to a few people, and having a good chat with Duncan at Race Dynamix. I've decided to replace the up-pipe with a standard part which I'm told will aid the spooling of the turbo, and with the sort of power I'm currently at will be much more beneficial.

I'm hoping to get these issues fixed this week, and then aim to get the RA mapped with Duncan asap to make sure everything is running as it should be after those changes.

I might be able to enjoy the car then! It's been sat in the workshop the last week with no exhaust! 😂

oh dear. lots of cheap ebay tat fitted to these cars unfortunately. sounds like the downpipe fitted was the same design as the standard one, which has half of the flange blocked off for some bizarre reason, hence why bellmouth decat downpipes give such good gains and improve spool massively. should be good once you get it fitted and the up piipe replaced as well.

It does appear that way mate.

Although to be fair to the previous owner I don't think these were fitted by him. In fact the modifications he carried out are sympathetic and of good quality.

'Bellmouth' that's it! A good description and that's exactly what my replacement down-pipe is like. I'm not hoping for huge 'gains' but I think both the re-designed down-pipe, and a non blowing and better sized up-pipe will certainly improve things even if they are only minor.
