RON98 Remap - Definitely worth it!

  172 Cup
Mapped my 172 Cup using the RSTuner and RON98 map from Fastchip, and following guide written by martin182, and its made a really nice difference to the car.

I know its only a few bhp at the most but it feels so much quicker and the acceleration has also perked up a lot!

Anyone thinking about doing this I would highly recommend it.

Big thanks to Martin for answering my stupid questions.

I have this map on my car for 2 years now and it's one of the best mods I did!
Just for comparison, here's my car with this remap vs stock 182. You can see the huge difference in torque.

Yeh its very noticable difference, i knew it was going to feel a little different but wow!

Nice comparison, you can really see how the torque evens out and it feels awesome

I have just got myself an RS tuner that i will be unlocking and ordering the 98ron map for my 172. So really pleased to here very positive comments about it from people who have done the same.

Had the maps on both of my 172's, its a good generic map and worth doing if you're not going down the cams route.

Im liking the sound of these tbh but im s**t with computers, i would have to get someone who has done theirs to do mine, i can only just log on tbh.

I have decatted my 182 would i benefit from the rstuner? If so would i need the 98 ron map? Or would i be better going to btb for a remap?

Its up to you really mate, the RSTuner and 98Ron map is a very good generic option and seems to work well, its pretty cheap as well. I think you can get maps tweaked slightly to better match your car if you go to a specialist but but sure if it would make that much difference.

How much does this cost in total to do? I want to put this map on my car and noticed a specialist not far from me who does it for £160 ish all in. Is it actually cheaper to buy it and do it myself or just take it there?

Well you can pick up the old style RSTuner for around 70/80 quid, the unlock code for it was 58 euro, and the map was 25 euro. So around £150 for eveything you need but then you can get your money back on the RSTuner if you selling it on after you're done. Process takes about 24hrs from getting the RSTuner until you have a remapped car because you have to wait for Fastchip to send you the right map for your car :)

Cost me about £20, bought an RSTuner with the correct map I needed for £145, paid £40 I think for unlock code, sold RSTuner + maps for £165.

Depends how lucky you are ;)

Yeh i thought i could get away with using a map that was purchased by another users but im glad i didnt because after a bit more research i realised it wouldnt have worked. Be very careful if you use a map purchased by someone else because the map need to match the software version of your ecu. To be fair the RSTuner wont let you apply a map that doesnt work but still be careful

Thanks for the info :) I will keep an eye out in the for sale section for one. Can I buy either the old or new RStuner then? Only really interested in the RON98 map, as I run the car on it already anyway! Don't want any others really

I was given/gave the firmware version too, both 182's also, so no worries there :)

I think now-a-days the Map is linked to your VIN, so can't be done, but older maps certainly can.

  Fiesta ST Stage 3
Silly question but do you need to run 98 RON fuel if you upload this map or is 95 still the same ?

The clue is in the name. But if u don't it won't suddenly blow up

99 is fine (aka Tesco Momentum etc).

Generally you're ok to go higher, but going lower isn't so good iirc.

So in this case, Tesco Momentum or any other RON99 should be fine for RON98.

Yeah basically all RON is the octane of the fuel ( combust ability ) so the higher the number the better it bangs basically ! So if its mapped on 98 anything above is fine , just below isn't really great for the engine ! But if like me you run it's religiously on super unleaded this won't be a issue !!

not quite true. the higher the octance, the worse it explodes essentially. higher octane means the explosion can be timed more precisely

In technical terms yes was trying to make it easy to explain ! Lol
i wasnt even going technical yet! it could easily go far more technical. i just thought it was worth pointing out, although to most people what you originally said was probably explained enough

What about BP Ultimate as I swear that is only 97 octane? Will that be okay to use?

I have this map also, made the car so much better. I did a trackday without the map, and one after the map and it felt so much better/smoother
Might be a placebo effect, but I will always buy V-Power/98ron fuel - if for any reason I have to use other fuel, it doesn't feel the same (imo)

My idle is much better when warm, bit erratic whilst warming up, but sits in 1000rpm when warm...

I thought 172s and 182s were already 98-RON only?
As per the fuel filler flap anyway.
