Running an engine in

hi guys after some help and advice from more experienced people here regarding running a rebuilt enigne in.

basically ive been building a F7R (old school i know ;)) turbo engine for a while now (new internals etc.) and it wont be long before i trial fit it in the car, plumb and wire it in etc. but i have been told by a guy in work with me who has built a few engines in the past that running engines in is a proper ball ache and just isnt fun at all and he sugested i get the engine put on an engine dyno and run in by a company so when it comes to fitting it in my car its just a case of start her up and go.

this is something that has intrested me due to the obvious advantages of this, havent thought of any drawbacks? but i have no idea where to begin with this.
can anyone offer any advice with regards to this?

cheers

yes basically, setting a rev limiter at about 4k and bedding the rings in etc. takes a while. with the advantages of having an engine dyno do the work for you its easier to apply the right load on the engine than if it was a plank behind the wheel in a car.

theres also the plus point that included in the price ( i think) youd get the engine managment mapped and a dyno readout. so then you can actually go down the pub and start willy waving proper figures at the flywheel rather than made up ones :p

Think you have to do more frequent oil chages too, how much would you be lookin at on a dyno out of interest ?

yeah you need to run it on minerall oil for about 500 miles then do an oil change run it for about 1k then another chage to the semi synthetic stuff. oil changes should be frequent then i should imagine

im hoping for 250 bhp at the wheels at about 1 bar of boost.

as for driving it normally im not 100% sure. theres conflicting views all over the internet about running an engine in and tbh with that much go under my right foot im likley to be a bit of a tool and not run the engine in properly. im looking for as much reliability as i can from this engine so obviously it neds to be run i correctly and i just dont have the knowladge or self controll to conduct that in the car

lol matt id end up doing that if i hadnt spent so much money on it :p

anyone know what sort of price range im looking at for an engine to be dynoed?

no lol, far too tight :p

makes no ods where i ask this question anyway as the same would apply if it was a NA car

this is how a few people i know run in there big bhp c20 lets.. first they run a few heat cycles ( get engine upto temp then shut down several times) then they uses the cheapest oil they can use ( cheaper oil, lesser protection means it will wear things in marginally quicker) forgotten the run in milage will try and get that later, think they lept below 4k ish with the od 3/4 throttle burst here and there...

may be best way / may not be best way.. but thats what they do and its worth looking into

yeah i understand there are loads of diffrent ways to do it, all have theyre pros and cons. but im currently looking into this dyno idea, being as the engines out and it wouldent be much of an issue to lob it in the back of the daily hack drive it up to somewhere and whack it on a dyno it seems like a good idea atm.

i just dont know where to go, how much im looking at and what sort of servoces can be offered (i.e mapping etc.)
