Running Costs

  Stagecoach Ticket
I just put my 1.2 back to stand and looking towards a 172 as its going cheap from a freind. Iam a student atm and use the car around 80miles a week to and from uni. I use around £15-£20 a week in fuel going to and from uni and odd jobs here and there which i really should walk anyway!

How much more would it cost to run the 172 fuel and repairs wise aswell are they super pricey for parts?

P/S i drive like a massive grandad 90% of the time can see returns of 55mpg from the 1.2

Do you travel on motorways on city roads?

I get an average of 25.2mpg in my 172, all city roads. 38-42mpg on motorway.

I get about 80 miles for £20 lol

Dual carriageway mainly mate from my house 10 Miles up the A2 to my university 3 times a week. so proberly more like 60 need miles a week. Surely you be able to get 35mpg on a combined cycle taking it easy with commuting like that

I wouldn't rely on that quote too much mate in a 1*2 lol

Once you see an open road it's darn impossible to drive like a grandad

It's hard to drive slowly in a 1*2 especially if upgrading from a 1.2 I mean why sell your current car if you drive like a grandad lol

Parts are more expensive if you want genuine Renault or high performance parts but then that's obvious with it being a higher performance car.

Fuel costs are barely any different, about £10 a week difference between my 172 and my old 1.2, and that's running the RS on V-Power. Like Martin said the 1.2 16v is cack on fuel for what it is.

  Ph 1 172
I went from a 1.2 to my 172 and it has cost me nearly £20 more a month in petrol get bout 27mpg around town high 30's to low 40's on motorway, the parts are not really much more expensive that anyother renault Clio, tyres are quite a bit more though!!

If you drive like a grandad 99% of the time what's the point in getting a 172 which is a b-road blaster and built to go fast

Reason for swapping is i live about 5mins away from lydden hill and will blast it places where it needs to be blasted but iam not tht fussed on the uni or tesco run iam happy at 60

I just need to be getting pretty good fuel comsuption

doubt i will upgrade performance wise as the price iam getting the 172 for makes it worth just running as it is

Are you sure you should be selling the 1.2?
You seem to concered about fuel and prices, probably not the best move at the moment?

I get about 50/60 miles in my car on £10. And it's a 1.4.

the 172 ive been offerd is very cheap is the only real reason i would be swapping and i have always fancied somthing quicker. I dnt mind paying abit more in fuel for it just dnt want to pay massive money to run a renault tbh

being honest all petrol mk2 clios are completely shite on fuel, infact the 172 is the only one that is surprizingly good, i took my 172 to work the other day a 30 mile drive of part motorway, part b roads and wasnt driving hard yet wasnt really holding back and averaged 38mpg!

my 100 however is one of they cars that every time you drive it you think its impossible for something to be so quick at covering ground while being so economical!

  Clio 172
I average around 30mpg in my 172

I am not a sunday driver by any means and i like to have a spirited drive when i am on the B-roads going to my work so i think 30mpg is fine for me, this is also using bp ultimate. i am not sure how much i go through in a month but it doesnt bother me because i dont drink and my enjoyment now comes from my car.

At the start when i first got my 172 i wasnt all that happy with it, not the way it drives because to me it is a great drive but the way it looked, now i have it the way i want with a new exhaust, matching inlets and coilovers to come this week i am really starting to enjoy the car so much more. I even find myself bored at night and just think f**k it i'll go out for a drive as i like it so much.

I dont think you would regret getting the 172 or 172 cup whatever you choose because they are very enjoyable to own, sure they are not the fastest on the road but who cares and if you are coming from a 1.2 then it wont matter to you.

Yeah iam not buying it to go super fast. Just want somthing abit more fun
30+ mpg is fine i think i could proberly get 38-39mpg on my normal runs. Judging from comments here and from a 172 owner/freind of mine.

There is no doubt that they are fun so i dont think you can go wrong if thats what you want. Somewhat of a happy medium.

-fast not too fast
-handles great
-not to thirsty petrol wise
-matter of opinion but i think they are lovely looking motors.

My 172 will do 37 mpg on a decent run and on track around 18 mpg. Pretty decent for a high performance car. My friend runs a Subaru Legacy GTB twin turbo and is lucky to see 18 mpg! it drops to about 9mpg if driven hard! The performance is something else but the fuel bills are eye watering!!

I was in the exact same boat mate. Im a student, had my 1.2 but wanted an RS so much. I do about 200 miles a week though, if not more sometimes.

Was getting 50.2mpg out of the 1.2
Bought a Ph2 172 and im currently getting 39.9mpg (which isnt total granddad driving, there is a little bit of fun driving).
Petrol wise, ive gone from using £20 a week , to around £30-35 which isnt bad. \I run the 172 on Super Unleaded also.

Student loans FTMFW though. They basically bought my 172 for me :D
