Really looking forward to repairing this... Might just f**k it off to the scrap yard now... Any ideas what this could be??

sounds like one of the valves has gone, if not, sounds like the cambelt tensioner about to break, advised not to drive it or you will be looking at over a 1000 pounds worth of damage...

The engine needs stripping, but to make sure if is a valve, you need to do a compression test to see which cylinder it is, and how many valves are bent

Sorry, but if you need a cheap repair, i know a kid who can do it for you, but i live in yorkshire.. and depends if that is the problem..

my 1.4 sounded similar when the exhaust mani cracked so maybe have a look at that too?

My old 1.2 sounded the same, turned out it had dropped a valve.
