Snapped timing belt!! Advice Pls!

Timing belt snapped on my Ph1 172 and im really just looking for advice as to what to do next. My mates garage has confirmed its def the belt thats failed and is taking the head off as we speak.

Now,

Am I best just to get any any bent valves replaced (or whole 16?) and put a Timing belt kit on it or is it time to look for a decent 2nd hand engine??

Cheers!!!

tbh i'd go down the new engine route, I did when my head gasket went! So much easier and you can change all the serviceable parts to make it future proof!

I took the opportunity to fit a complete 182 engine and manifold in my 172

But then you got the cost of garage swapping it too

Depends how much of a mess the original lump is TBH. If its just bent valves, just swap them

Cheers guys,

Ill wait and see what damage is then. Could go down new engine route but at least if I fix current engine then i'll know that its rock solid(rather than starting all over again with another unknown engine). It was a pretty decent engine before this mishap. Always been serviced on time etc and timing belt had only been done 30k ago albeit before I purchased the car.

It may be worth getting the head checked by a reputable specialists, you don't know what damage has been done to the valve guides etc.
But definately worth repairing the head as you rightly said the engine was spot on prior to belt failure, you never really know what you are buying when its second hand. Yes it may come with a guarantee but all that covers is the engine, not yours or some else's time! Better the devil you know and all that!
We use a company called motorcast components based in Wem, Shropshire. They courier all over the U.K. and are spot on!

Motorcast are very good, not just saying that as one of their suppliers but as an ex customer as well. Agree on getting it repaired instead of an engine swap, you just don't know what you are getting 2nd hand.

What kind of hassle are we talking if I was to swap the engine? Im getting prices of over £600 to do the belt, head etc.

How much roughly is a 2nd hand engine and do I need to swap ECU, keys etc??

cheers!!

Should be no need to swap the ECU. Just drop the replacement lump in. HOWEVER you would be an idiot not to do both belts and tensioning kits as well as replace the clutch while its all out.
