Gally – you just haven’t seen my Willy ;)

Ali – I hear yours was a spider chariot and a bit of a dog but even after that you can still give the Willy love J

2live is right (Fred says so, so it must be true) but then that isn’t really what the OP asked he is obviously after a newer car and who can blame him “classic” cars can cost A LOT. It is a labour of love.

Ph1 172 gets my vote more cable throttle fun (and the closest you can get to the Willy without the rust)

Tell me about it, I own a 10 year old car and you really have to love it to stay interested!

Get some pics up mate. Maybe if 2Live was more like you I wouldn't argue with him so much!

Still the best looking RS made (Bar the vee). I wanted so badly to like it and on the odd day i did! Even if it felt that it was trying to kill me everytime i drove it!

It wasn't that bad, i think if you had exposure to the mk1 prior to owning a newer RS you were in a better mindset. To me it just felt old and loose. Even after upgrading little bits and bobs!

Still looks great tho, Near enough a full respray!! Memories, seeing as this topic has gone way off mark anyway!

Non rusty arch. Please ignore appalling tyres Pilot HX's sourced and ready to go on one of my other sets of Willy speedlines which are unused and in Renault boxes. Also ignore tatty bumper strip new one now on :)

Funnily enough I think the best wheels for a 172 ph1/ph2 are willy wheels, they look fantastic on most cars!

They are pretty! Pirelli have made some ditchfinders in their time! Mines came with p7000's as standard and the ZS fiestas used to come with p6000's! Ditchfinders!

Pics of you?

Gally - nice try :)

Ali - no they are copies but as close to original Willy 1 sticker as poss. A lot of time and effort went into making these copies by members on WC. They are Northy approved ;).

Willy 1 stickers don't have the infill and Willy 2 and 3 do. I tried to buy original Willy 1 stickers from Renault but they don't make them any more and only sell the infilled stickers for the bargain price of £196 for the 3.

As I want my car to look as original as possible I went for the considerably cheaper copies.

Cool story hey!

unless you want originality ;). fortunately mine hasnt succumbed to the rusty arches problem yet so still has original stickers ;)

Yeah it is a shame people can't keep there willy 1's original as the stickers are no longer available. VERY good copies are the next best thing in my view rather than having filled in Willy 2/3 stickers.

At least you still have something original on your car;)

So what is the OP going to go for anyway. Seems most people are saying Ph1 172.

mmm, love a nice willy.

Speaking honestly, the best chassis is the Mk1 without a shadow of a doubt. It's light as f**k and you really can tell it. Even throwing the 1.4 RT around it's a blast. Sticking to the OP, though, it's mk2 PH1 all the way

Light...Aye, because of the rust! ;)

It's far from being the best chassis. In its day it was! Chassis technology has moved on!

I think there still nice to look at,but so is an escort cosworth but i plan to own none.Too fragile like an integrale. All very pretty and they break a lot.

Plus there just not fast enough to compete with todays cars. And if i may say there starting to blend into traffic(looks wise)

I think they were great in the day,and even now would make you smile, evo are running one atm and they put it away for the winter last month due to lack of traction control, rust and ABS.They didnt want to risk it...lol
They also said it is quite sad to hide your cars flaws and call it character when they break......
