Sport rep or wait a few years?

so you may know i'm fairly new and because im only 17 i didn't know much about clios when first buying one i got a authentique once i've got a years driving + no claims under my belt in about 10 months time i would love a 172 but for obvious insurance reasons, its not going to happen unless i get 6,500+ just for the insurance so my question is should i wait it out in my authentique and do i few minor mods (notworth making it a rep as the cost would not be worth it...) or buy a rep for a few years till insurance goes down for me for a 172? thoughts?

Simple mods. Things you can put back.

Sightly lower suspension. Maybe some nicer wheels. Colour code (if it's not already done) and then leave it. You can put it back to standard when time comes to upgrade.

Making a sport rep costs loads and the insurance increase is hefty if you buy one already done.

Be better to buy a rep, put it back to standard and put the money you make towards your insurance! Lol.

You've got to walk before you run. I had a 1.2 for a couple of yrs then bought a 172...Wasn't cheap then either.

Regardless, in a couple of yrs, the 172 will be the equiv. of the Nova. A washed up/high mileage hot hatch. Something bigger and better will be around then!

i see both your points but what if the car had already been made into a sports rep that i was to buy, even if it was still a 1.2/1.4 rep already done? i imagine the insurance will still probably go up though... hmmm. i suppose i may just wait... i'll have to have a think about it then

Just do simple mods tbh, then upgrade when you can afford the insurance.

I started off with a 1.2 Clio aswell. Coilovers and other subtle mods sorted me out until I could afford to upgrade

Save your money and pay for the insurance, tax, mot, swervicing and inevitable failures of the car.

THen get the 197 then you can insure it without having lube on standby when you call up for a quote

No point in 'upgrading' to a extreme or dynamique either. They're all going to be slow. Stick with what you've got and save up like a beast!

Wait and dont do any mods at all. Unless you are going to throw quite a bit of money at a standard car it will just look rubbish and worse than standard, and you'll still always want a 172/182 anyway.

Save your money mate. You can make non-sports look great and handle superbly for very little money. Then you can chuck it around, maybe even do some track days and learn how to drive it.

My insurance actually went down after making mine a rep!

Disagree with this, modifing is all personal preference and I don't regret spending the money on our DCI - IMO it's been well worth it

In order to do a rep (properly) you need about £900 - £1100 and thats witout telling the insurance.

If i could have my time again i will litrally have a £500 bag of s**t build up my no claims and when i hit 21 get something good

I think it's different with a DCI though.... Then you have a nice looking car that's economical. But, being as he's only in a 1.2 for insurance reasons, then there's no point spending loads of money, only to change car ASAP.

its cost me about £500 to make mine into a rep, about £200 out my own pocket after iv sold my other bits and bobs, you just need to use your common sense! id love a 2.0l but for the milage i do its really not worth the Xtra fuel and insurance, my car gets me to work and to the gym and looks better than some sports do lol, i dont go on track days so i dont need a big engine round town, and when you go out of town you want good fuel economy
