Spraying Alloys

  mk2 slow. . .
Going to set myself a project over the next few weeks to refurb/re spray my wheels. I was going to use basic Halfords Gloss Black spray Paint, Is this ok, how long does it last etc?, wheels will be refurbed, sanded, then primmed, and will be putting 3 layers of laquer ontop. Its my first project like this so any adive welcome, But the basic jist is is halfords spray paint fine to use?

i have sprayed 4 sets of alloys with halfords paints and all have been fine and the paint has lasted.

just make sure you take your time, preparation is crucial

and good luck ! :D

the black should be ok, but if you were doing them white i would recommend using a car body colour like merc polar white, as the standard halfords gloss white is quite thin and this can cause run lines.

what grade sanding paper are you using if its 180 or more it needs a cote or 2 of primer . then give it all a scotch down

I did mine the other week, it's a lot of work to make 'em look right, I sanded, prepped, primered and primered, sprayed and sprayed the lacquered the things to death. Doesn't look as good as I'd hoped, and the paint isn't hard wearing. And anthracite/peugeot cossack grey looks good cleaned and polished, after a day it looks rubbish again.

im using gloss black, so i dont need laquer? I would of thought i needed laquer to protect the paint from chipping? Am i wrong?

1 coat will do more harm than good

it will just mess up your nice finish on the gloss black

need a good few wet coats to get a nice finish with the laquer.

wont be enough to do 4 wheels with 1 can

when we sprayed my dads wheels gloss black(from halfords) we still used a couple of layers of laquer as we bought it, plus for the finish really

this may be a silly question, but what do you mean a wet coat? and how will it do more harm then good? all four wheels have been refurbed today, all lovely and smooth

you need to put laquer on heavy thick and wet like LOTS or you wont get a good glossy finish puting a light dust of laquer on a gloss black paint will kill the gloss on the black

as above, just one light dust coat of laquer will just make it feel like P80 grit sandpaper. cellulose single pack needs to be put on very wet or else it dries very rough. you'll paint your wheels gloss black, theyll dry to a pretty mint finish, youll put the laquer on and youll end up painting them again

ok cheers for the adivce, only thing is ive sprayed several bike frames before as thats a sport im veyr much into, and i no without laquer that the paint scratches easily. How does this sound 2xprimer, 3x colour, 2x laquer then happy days? Its my first project on wheels like this, so just make sure i get it right as i dont want to fork out on more paint again.

tbh i wouldnt plan it out, you use as much as you need to use.

like you might get the colour in 2 coats, it may take 6 coats, you dunno until youre spraying.

as for the laquer, yea it will stop it from showing noticeable scratches as without the laquer, if it does get scratched you may see the primer, the laquer adds an extra few layers of protection. if you wanna throw some on then thats upto you, but make sure you put it on wet in a warm room so it dont run
