Spraying wing mirrors

Going to spray my standard black plastic wing mirrors to my cars colour, which is gris boreal silver. When painting it is it just a case of the following:

- sand down
- few layers of primer
- few layers of paint
- few layers of laquer.

Is this the right way of doing it, even though im spraying a plastic.

when sanding the primer be gentle as to not rub through

Couple of layers of primer
Sand
A layer of primer
(Repeat the last two untill you sand the primer to a completely smooth surface)
Couple of layers of paint
2-3 days to completely dry
3 layers of laquer

You want to wet sand it when you sand the primer as well btw

listen to the FM. it needs something to key to so if you just spray onto the primer it will fall off eventually. i would go for 2 or 3 coats of paint...

yea paint onto wetsanded primer

tbh with aerosols, as many as it needs, may be done in 2, may need 6, just build it up til it looks right

generally 2-3 primer, 2-3 paint, 3 laquer

Getting the spray from paints4u, have you ever tried/ heard about there products? Hope the match will be spot on.

shouldnt be too bad as the covers are only small and not in imediate contact with other painted parts

undecided to do the front + rear bumpers though, think the black suits mine with the black wheels.

only do the actual mirrors, not the plastic but thats attached to the car.
it looks s**t when its all painted.

What sand paper will i need. The really sharp stuff or the softer ones?

1200 wet and dry >1500 wet and dry. work your way up through the grits

I used P180 then P320 then primed it, now i'm gonna use P800 - P1200 wet to dry to sand the primer down then prime it again mate.

You don't need to sand the primer down then prime it again at all. Listen to what FM says.

400-600 is fine for sanding the bare plastic, but I'd personally use 800 for sanding the primer, and if you want to sand the lacquer and polish it back up you'll need 1500 or higher.

ok cool thanks mate, so i'll use my 600 to sand the plastic to start with then, then ill have to get some wet 800 or 1000 for the primer...

O and btw JCC if you read FMs colour coding guide he has re-primed.

Yes, but only cause he rubbed through on half of it taking out chips etc. If any damage has been removed before you prime it and you don't rub through too much when flatting you do not need to re-prime it. I work in a bodyshop (I'm a painter) and we never re-prime after flatting.

I am just putting a first layer of paint on the wing mirrors now.

Yeah I went and got the paint mixed at some shop near me as theres different shades of 632, so this place matched it up perfect .

I'm gonna finish painting the front trim and then I'll post you the pics of the side trims and front.

Did you the the wing mirrors off alright? And are yours electric?

Im thinking of doing the side strips, leaving the bullets black.

Yeah thats what im thinking, may just leave everything including the side strips, or, i could do the side strips and leave everything else but dont know if that woud look silly?

I think it looks better it all being done personally, well in my case it does seen as I've got black & silver alloys. You can see what it would look like all done if you pull the front trim off mate as the under colour is the same as the car.

How about if i pull the side strips off, its obviously silver underneath? How easy are they to come off?

What alloys have you got and wat size mate? mine are 15s btw.
