starting trouble on old 1.4rt

Hi all,

Having trouble starting my 1998 r reg 1.4 rt clio from cold. Once started it will be totally fine and you can stop and start the engine as you like with no problems. But once left over night or after a day at work it will again not start easyly.

Ive changed the plugs aabout 2 thou miles agao and ive took them out to have a look at them and they seem fine, so i cleaned them up a tad and put them bk in and still no diffrence.

It also has had a new air filter in approx 1000 miles ago.

What else can i check?????????

Check the battery is in good condition. Sounds like its on its way out.
Failing that check the Coilpack as this is a common problem that it starts to degrade and fails.

So it has trouble cold starting?

Problem with cold start enrichment??
Do these run a 5th injector for cold start enrichment as valvers do? that could be at fault?
If not the it needs new injector(s) / taking to renault for diagnostics

Is it a mk2 or mk1, 98 and r plate is change over year!

Possible head gasket, they seem to have a habit of rotting away on these energy lumps. I would get a coolant preasure tester on the cooling sytem. When its under preasure you will probably find the coolant will be forced into the clylinder and cause it to not start initially.

to answer questions...its a mk 1 98 s reg,

i dont think it is an enrgy type engine.

battery is in tip top condition.

how do i test the coil pack???

where do i get a coolent presure tster from?

It will be the same as the energy engine under all the plastic engine covers, as for the tester any garage should have one.
