Steering wheel difference 182 / 172

  RS2'ed 172 Cup
My 172 Steering Wheel has done the old trick of melting into a black sticky Mess.

Ive been looking for a mint 172 wheel for a while and they seem to be fairly rare.

The 182 wheel (With Cruise Control buttons) Is it the same wheel as a 172 with a different shaped Airbag and a seperate plate with the buttons mounted on?

If I was to buy a 182 wheel and remove the airbag, can i take the buttons off and fit my 172 airbag to make a "172 wheel" ?

Same wheel bar the buttons. Controversial, but get a 182cup wheel. It's more basic (no thumb grips or fake leather) but it's slightly smaller, and nicer to use IMO.

Do the buttons come off do you know?

Ive not seen the 182 cup wheel, ill keep my eyes open on Ebay.

Its a Shame the 172 wheel is so poorly made as its a really comfortable wheel to drive with :(

I might have a look and see if its possible to get it re-trimmed, although i dont know what can be done about the thumb grips?

182cup wheel is the Dynamique wheel IIRC. Doesn't look as nice, but the smaller diameter and slightly thinner rim make it nicer to use in practice. Plus, as it doesn't have that nasty 'leather that melts', it doesn't get that horrible sticky feeling.

Nope, the 182cup wheel is a smaller diameter, I thought it was, no got my tape measure out. Can't remember by how much, but def smaller. Can't be the same wheel, as the thumbgrip bracket is part of the 1*2 wheel IIRC.

Same thing happened to my 172 steering wheel also..
Looked a mess when it started flaking..

182 steering wheel is much better

Id love a tutorial on how to remove the cruise control buttons off a sport steering wheel :p

Once the airbag is off it'll be self explanatory mate.

Yeah... you say that but... er... well the only thing i could figure out were the torx screws holding the buttons there but you've still gotta remove the frames off, I can get the top one off but then it's still held in by the connection wire and Im damned sure as mustard that I cant remove the bottom frame. Probably making a mountain out of a mole hill :dead:

PS. sorry for jacking the thread slightly..

Not to worry, i would be interested to know as well as i might have to resort to a 182 wheel myself.
