Technical/track boffs please - caliper wear?

My brakes grumble badly and loudly during heavy use. I had a smilar problem around 40-50k, much less though, and cured it with a new set of calipers.

Now at 90k it's back and ten times worse.

Are the calipers shagged again, or could it be something on the hub assembly that's at fault?

Thanks.

Simple answer is brake pads metal to metal Mark? Thats the most common thing with brakes grumbling, although you should also hear, and feel, terrible grinding screeching noises.

What was wrong with your calipers the first time round?

i think we're on the 4th pair of new calipers now, good think is they're cheap on exchange anyway

If they are the same as 182 calipers mine are at Angelworks (Done about 25k). You can have them if you want give Ben a call.

Set of 4 pots VS the cost of 4 sets of refurbed callipers?!?!?

you know it makes sense! :D

But back to the question in hand, checked your wheel bearings etc?

Maybe due to the high temps over such a long period of time the seals etc just wear out/degrade/get fried?

Nah, not wheel bearings, had them all replaced recently. Plus the noise is only ever present on track or during very hard road driving, and only when hard on the brakes.

I think last time Fred explained that the bushes which the securing bolts go through wear over time allowing the caliper to rattle slightly - kinda makes sense I think.

4 pots? Maybe in the future...for now, Renault's finest with some Carbone Lorraine pads will do.

calliper has no bushes, its simple two bolts holding them on.

And if they were worn i would of thought it would be a constant problem?

Might be worth whipping the wheels off and taking a good look, pull it all about etc.

Do the brakes lose any power? or do they still work well with or without the noise?

think he means the bushes that go over the caliper guides?, the 13mm outer into the 16mm inner bolt? if the seals go and dirt beds in then they get fucked

Seems silly to stick with stock calipers still? Willwoods aren't that much are they?

I have 310mm discs and 4 pots behind 15" williams wheels Mark :)

Get willwoods and 280's and you should be more then fine

Brakes still work fine, under duress even, they just b**ch about loudly it while they do.

4 pots and 15"? Does that work?

There loads out there plus its not difficult to get some made up anyway for your car.

Just make sure you get dust sealed IMo realy if its doing loads of miles and ou cannot clean and strip them all the time.

mark you tried the lorraines yet?

i've got them in mine with brembo max groove discs, squeel like f**k! they get worse after a track day.

yeah mine got worse after the first track day, then did another, still squeeling away. will remove them and re-grease them, see if there is any difference.

Mark I'm doing this on my 172 trackslag with the GDI kit so I'll let you know.

Surely the squealing is because the anti squeal bars have been removed from the calipers to fit the bigger pads?

Might be wrong though.

LOL

  Lionel Richie
they're NOT anti squeal shimms Mat! they're just shims to take up the gap between the OE pad and caliper
