So met up with a mate today to see his 500bhp Supra, absolutely ballistic piece of kit! More flies on the side window than the front!

It was nothing short of a f**king ordeal trying to get in/out the c**t but nothing a bit of grunting and bending canny sort lol

Remember when everyone was saying how the 200 looked fugly? Weird how cars just grow into fashion, I think they're probably my GOAT.

Aye i always hated the way they looked for years but i really like them now!

Couple of weeks in - what the actual f**k is with the lethargic throttle response?! Any remedies?🤯
You have to drive them hard. Rev the s**t out of them.
I did have a standard car other than a remap though and it was noticeably better. But it will never be really sharp by todays standards.

I honestly thought the same when I had mine it’s quite a difficult car to get good launch off the mark, 1st gear is over in a millisecond and then you jolt backwards and forwards if you miss time the changes, once you master it and get used to driving everywhere like Hyundai i10 rental car in Malaga you’ll see the performance is really good. I have seen you can get a box that plugs in to improve throttle response you could try that. I think that’s why the gearbox tends to die in 3rd and 4th as most people ring its neck and change between the two gears as that is where u see most of your B road performance.

I really notice the throttle thing on my 200 as I have a 172 as well. I use the 200 all week and then get in the 172 at the weekend and it feels so responsive. The 172 does have a really good FBW pedal feel.

For me it feels like the pedal travel is just way too long.

I’d like to try the sprint booster

It's all you can notice when the pedal does that in a car, even just pulling away from a junction!

I really notice the throttle thing on my 200 as I have a 172 as well. I use the 200 all week and then get in the 172 at the weekend and it feels so responsive. The 172 does have a really good FBW pedal feel.

For me it feels like the pedal travel is just way too long.

Aye i didn’t seem to have this issue with any of the other clio’s! I’ve seen these sprint boosters, £200 to improve the throttle is a sore one right enough. Probably be better mapping it!

Let us know how the sprint booster goes, I personally think it’s better to just get used to it as a weird dongle thing is a bit of a clunky solution.

Mine is worse since I had it mapped, noticed it as soon as I pulled away. The whole way home I was just flexing the pedal and it felt like it took way more input for the same response.

You can't expect a remap to do much on a n/a engine other than to smooth out the power delivery, which as you say James might ironically make the car feel like it goes even slower. I think the sprint booster basically tells the car to condense the full travel of the accelerator into the initial part of the pedal travel so it doesn't actually do anything but change the feel of the pedal, which will feel great initially but I reckon you will get used to it and then come back to the conclusion that the acceleration is pap in a few months.

I did a couple of diy bits which made a massive difference to my car, 1st I cleaned the pcv valve diaphragm (a must do it felt so much more responsive), I also cleaned the maf sensor and checked the seal (zip tie it on if you can) and I only fill it with 99ron petrol.

Ah right! I’ve read bits and pieces about that - where is the PCV valve/MAF sensor? I’ve only had the bonnet open once so far to check the oil, not had a good nose around it yet!

Aye 99 is what i put in mine also.

That's what the PCV looks like: https://renaultpartsdirect.co.uk/parts/engine-parts/renault-clio-197-200-pcv-valve/ you need to carefully separate it and clean it out the best guide is on clio197.net but YouTube has a couple of instructional videos if your not overly confident.

The MAF sensor can be seen in this video: , it should be clean and also tight if it wiggles every time your engine shudders it will move about. if its loose as in the video zip tie it after cleaning.

Oh and I'm sure you would have mentioned this but if your temperature gauge doesn't go to the third notch it might have a stuck open thermostat which also causes performance issues.

essentially these three things are what every 200 owner should do when they first get their car.

I’d prob like the sprint booster, I’m not concerned about any performance gain but just want the pedal to fee the same as my 172.

Best thing I did on my 200 was remove the filter screens from the cam timing solenoid.

Was always randomly flat as a pancake which I hear a lot about the 197/200. I went to my mates one day and it was feeling flat, I lifted the solenoid out just to check and clean the filter screens (which to be fair looked pretty clean) popped it back in but when I drove home it was a different car. Made me think so took it out again and removed the filter screens and it’s not had a flat feel ever since and that must be 3-4 months now. It’s something we used to do on the imprezas with the AVCS heads. Maybe the solenoid needs replacing and removing the filter restriction helped that bit extra with oil flow.

Mine was the same, I fitted a new stat (which is a doddle btw) and it sits just below the next notch now, so not a big movement. I did this at the same time as a big service, I noticed a massive improvement in running but it could have been a few things due to doing it all at once. Regardless it needed doing.

If you follow the above advice then be careful if removing the MAP sensor, do it by hand, or it could snap.

The PCV clean is a doddle too, mine wasn't too bad though.

It sits at the 3rd notch normally. This is after changing my thermostat last month so I know it’s sitting right, be careful sourcing the thermostat as you want the original Renault one and not a 3rd party one as they operate at a different temperature to a normal Clio. I agree it’s a piece of cake to fit and no need to disconnect the battery and remove it like most guides tell you, instead just take out the plastic ducting. I just added a couple of pictures from my engine bay to show you the pcv location which is next to the dipstick, and I also bought a mag sensor clamp of eBay which is like a fancy zip tie and eliminates any movement and I just think for £15 why not it looks good too.

Aye stick a thermostat on that! - I put a gates one on mine as i could get one that day and its spot on (y)

Thank you mate! I’ll get one ordered and get it swapped out - remember having to do a couple on the 1*2’s i had and that was a piss case! Do they not require bleeding then afterwards?

I used diluted washing up liquid on mine as it was absolutely disgusting but mine had done 100k. Top tip take a photo of the parts in order of removal as when you come back to fit it after it’s all dry you will be wondering which way round the diaphragm goes.

Is it a map sensor? Whoops my autocorrect called it a mag sensor in the other post, I must admit I don’t really know the difference between a map or maf

Just different ways of measuring how much air is going into the engine.

MAF measures air flow before the throttle body.

MAP measures absolute pressure inside the intake manifold, in this case it's vacuum in an NA engine.

Aye i’ve actually done the photo taking thing before for exactly that reason!

I’ll get the PCV whipped off and cleaned and see what sort of position the sensors sitting at. I actually enjoy these small jobs!

Tempted to get it on a dyno to see where its at. Properly enjoying the 200, cliche as it is - everyone comes back!
