The Power PC Thread [f*ck off consoles]

Just speccing up a PC for a friend for their son. Quick question -

Would you rather have a better GPU or better CPU for the same money? Based on her budget, it's a toss up between these two (1080p gaming)

i7 12700 with a RTX 3060 Ti
OR
i5 12400 with a RTX 3070

Same price with certain builds on black friday

Personally I'd go for the 12400 and 3070 combo, for purely gaming workloads the difference between the CPUs is negligible so you'd see more benefit from the extra GPU power.

I completely agree chaps, really appreciate the help

It's for a 13 year old lad for a gaming PC for Xmas. £1500 budget for everything. So far spec'd up the following -

PC
https://www.scan.co.uk/products/sca...12400f-16gb-ddr4-8gb-evga-rtx-3070-1tb-m2-ssd

Mouse (absolute bargain btw, if anyone is after a new mouse)
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07G5XJLWK/?tag=cliospnet01-21

Mouse mat
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000UEZ36W/?tag=cliospnet01-21

Keyboard

Total = £1,527

I have a good asus 28” 1080 monitor with same refresh rate as the above. Only a few years old and mint. You can have it for free, just pay the postage. You can then use the money saved to upgrade the cpu?

Can’t be arsed selling it so if it goes to good use, that’s good enough.

Blimey Ant that's incredibly kind of you!

I'm more than happy to chuck you more than just postage mate?

Nah no need fella. Pm me your address, I have my new monitors box to put it in. You will need a hdmi cable but that’s it.

Postage would be £20 via parcelforce.

Morning all. Bit of a noob question im afraid. Certainly not a "power pc" one lol.
Wanting a curved monitor for my XPS 13 and wondered if anyone has any suggestions. Would like to spend £150 or so and seen these two:

Philips: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07TRJCQVJ/?tag=cliospnet01-21
Samsung: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08WXFQ2KW/?tag=cliospnet01-21

No idea what i am looking for tbh. Mostly excel, may plug in my xbox - this screen would likely be better than my 10+ year old 55" one downstairs.

Which Xbox do you have?

If you can lose the curve and chuck £20 on top this has higher resolution/you'll be able to fit more of your spreadsheet on the screen!

I was never quite happy with the cables so I bought a 4000D airflow and some braided cables and put it all together today

Current spec

Corsair 4000D
6x120mm Corsair fans
Ryzen 7 3700x
AsRock 6900XT Phantom Gaming
ASUS TUF B550M
Cryorig H7
32GB DDR4 3200 CL16
HX1000i
Corsair braided Type 4 cables
3x1TB SSD & 1x2TB SSD

Gonna try and upgrade the CPU if a decent deal comes around but it seems to chew it's way through everything I throw at it in 1440p. I like having the iCue dashboard for monitoring too, can see how much power it draws at full chat

You should be ashamed of yourself with that dust.

Also, don't fancy going AIO for CPU cooler?

Oh don't worry I was disgusted with myself for that amount of skin in there!

I don't really need an AIO tbh, CPU temps are always sub 60°C even with a reasonable OC and hammering it

This is running a benchmark, took the screenshot just after the cpu stress test results for the nerds

AIO does look a lot neater but this cooler has been in 3 PC builds now and it's never struggled

Got a support on the way to keep the graphics card from sagging too much. It says it has a metal frame along the PCB to stop sagging but it still sags 😂

A absolute massive shout out to @Ant1 for his generosity on sending me this monitor for free. It's a 27" 144hz MSI and it's absolutely PERFECT

With the money saved we have managed to upgrade the PC to make it more future proof.

You will make a young lad very happy on Xmas day with his first PC! :D

Thanks again mate

I bought a Steam Deck. Felt like a good idea at the time.

Almost filled the internal NVME with roms already lol.

Feels like an interesting alternative to a gaming laptop, might look into one if/when I start travelling for work again

What's the battery life like?

R3k1355

Absolute wetter.

Good price, it's the slower model of the WD Black line. I couldn't say if you'd really notice the difference between the two, which is mostly in the read speed.

ChrisR

That’s the thing with these drives, the speeds they can do are ridiculous, even a ‘slow’ one is faster than most people will ever need, and would certainly struggle to see the difference.

Still 5k Mbps read lol.
