The Power PC Thread [f*ck off consoles]

Check using the Corsair software. You can always up the fan speed if you want to try that. But I'd not be too worried with those temps to be honest.

H100i on a 4770K o/c to 4.4Ghz idles around 35-40 degrees.

Anybody bought an Alienware PC lately. They have an aurora advertised with the Titan z card for just under £2700. Are they any good?

Also what are people's thoughts on that graphics card?

Would I be better off with an sli setup with 780ti's?

I bet you a £100, no a grand, you could build a far better pc yourself than one of those Alienware jobs.

Judging by the online prices of the Titan z, anywhere between £2100 - £2400 for just the card it seemed good value. That's assuming the card is worth it's price tag, some reviews I've read would seem that it's not.

I've been giving the idea of a self build some thought. My last computer was bought from pcspecialist, it's lasted me a good five years and going by their current prices a triple sli build would save me around £200 if I did it myself. I haven't searched extensively for the best component prices yet.

Anyone got a shock from a PSU before?

Just unplugged my 3d printer's PSU to move the cable away as it's in the way and I'm not using it atm, must have touched a couple of the 3 pins and literally just given my self a shock! Certainly didn't expect so no clue if it was a big one or not, but never had that happen before? :S

The PSU is switched off on the unit itself, and has been for 24hours+ so confused why I got a shock from it?!

It's a cheap PC PSU - Alpine 600W silent PSU.

^^^ Or capacitors for that matter? Anyway...

Shut down your computer, unplug it, then press the power button. You'll probably be shocked to find lights come on, drives & fans spin up for 2-3 seconds...

Would anyone like a 92mm red LED thermaltake thunderblade fan? Powered by 4 pin molex, has a 3pin connector to monitor RPM. Quite high RPM so not the quietest fan ever but I've had noisier too. Just cover postage. Alternatively (LOL) I have just had the idea of proposing that I'll swap you a fan for a Renault wheel bolt?

I dismantled a 650w PSU a few years ago, my arm was numb for 4 days.... Nasty shock you can get!

Hahah! Well it's here :D I got windows 8.1 disk here too just to see what it's like. Needed a change after having 7 for so long!

Nice

Personally I love 8.1. It's lightning quick on an SSD. Just make sure you install a program called "Classic Shell", makes it much better :)

  Turbo'd MX-5 MK4
IMHO there is no need to install classic shell with 8.1, it can be configured in such a way that you'll barely notice any difference between it and 7.

Never looked into in tbh Gareth, I just thought they put the start menu back in but it was extremely basic. So you can change it on 8.1 to the Windows 7 one?

  Turbo'd MX-5 MK4
No, that's about the only thing you can't do still. But IMHO you don't need it, you can configure 8.1 to display Computer, Control Panel, File Explorer etc on the desktop, any programs you regularly use you can locate on the start screen or have an icon on the desktop (you can also right click on the start icon and access a whole load of features immediately). You can configure it so that when it boots it doesn't go to the start screen, but goes to the desktop (like 7), what you basically end up with is Windows 7 with the start screen & app store as additional features. Neat things you can do include configuring the start screen to mimic your wallpaper as the start screen background and on a multi-display setup like mine it will even mimic the corresponding desktop depending on which monitor you initiate it from. There were a few more things they introduced with 8.1, one of which was adding the power down / restart function etc to the start screen, there were others but I can't remember them now (actually boot to desktop was one of them).

What OS do most people run for gaming?
I've been on Windows 7 for years and it's running perfectly so I'm not wanting to disrupt my setup if I can help it but I have heard that Windows 8 is faster for gaming?
If 8.1 is quicker than 7, how easy is it to upgrade without having to reformat etc...?

I have no experience on the matter but I would be surprised if it offered any noticeable gain.

Everyone I know that plays games uses 7. I don't see a reason to change myself seeing as every time I use 8 or 8.1 I use the phrase FFS.

IMO there's no need to upgrade from 7 to 8.1. The only reason I have 8.1 is because I bought a new SSD and needed a new copy of Windows so thought I may as well have the latest one. I haven't noticed any improvements to gaming, they all appear to run just as well on Windows 7 :)

Thanks, saves me the hassle of upgrading. :)

Windows 7 Home Edition for me. Reformatted to Windows 8 and couldn't get on with it. Went back to 7.

Windows 8.1 came out, reformatted to that. Still couldn't get on with it (though admittedly it was a better). Went back to 7.

I need to reformat again in the near future and will certainly be sticking to Windows 7. A great all-rounder O/S imo - I didn't see FA performance increase when running either version of 8 either.

8.1 boots faster for sure, but that's the only difference I've noticed. I wouldn't go back to 7 now, as far as I am concerned (except for if money comes into it) there is no reason to not use 8.1.

There's no appreciable gain/loss in gaming performance between Win7 / Win8. If you're happy with Win7 then stick with it for now. It will be worth upgrading to Win8 when DirectX12 is released though. :) You'll need at least Win8.x to use it.

Dropped 7 the moment 8 was available.

It takes some getting used to, but I now prefer it so much more.

Certainly feels faster and smoother, be it placebo or not.

8.1 is brilliant IMO, much improved over 8.

Windows 8 is just windows 7 with a touch interface system added. Don't waste your money.

Windows 8 is lighter then windows 7 so doesn't use as much ram, has direct x 11.2 support so in games such as bf4 you get about a 15% increase in fps and with the touch screen interface just get a program called start is back which makes it exactly like windows 7 on your start bar which is what i did, so you get it just likewindows 7 and it makes your pc faster and boot times are a lot faster with my SSD i have got it down to 11 seconds haha
