Thing To Look Ou For When Buying A 172

Hi this is just a quick first post

I'm in middle of looking for a mk2 172 or 172 cup (about an 02 or 03 plate), sorry if this has been posted before but is there anything i've to look out for when looking at cars ?

I.e: Coomon faults/problems

Recalls etc

Cheers guys

i presume people will pile in and scream "SEARCH, GOD DAMN SEARCH"

Only original questions are allowed from now on.... ;) the topic gestapo are watching you :clown:

  Vectra :(
Indeed a search will bring up lots of info mate

Make sure the cambelt is done etc as that the most expensive service, willbe looking £500+ for the cambelt service at Renault

Look out for the 4k rattle.

Rev stationary car to 4k and see if it sounds horrendous. Its the exhaust centre section.

  172
Make sure it's a car and not a painted cow like in the Mini adverts. People have started doing it with RSs now!

  Weeman sucks ****
How is it starting from cold, stone chips will tell of hard life, check the exhaust as they're sh1te and the cats go!

The steering wheels melt and fall apart.

Check the gearbox, they leak but not much.

why will it have more chips if driven fast?

Carefully check rear pads and discs and leaks on shocks (especially rear), exhaust, ignition keys are very weak so ensure these are tip-top. If you get the opportunity check for knocking when pulling away in first at around 4000 rpm as this can be the bottom engine mount bushes which is a common fault. Check electric windows are smooth and quiet as the motors are prone to break. Check for steering wheel condition as these are tending to fall apart in the recent hot weather and a replacement will cost over £200. Check clutch is good as I've seen estimates for the 500 quid mark. Better still get the AA or RAC to give it a check, it may be the best cash you parted with in the long run. And then obviously check the usual!!

Ive had my clio 172 cup now for 7 months.

If buying again i DEFO would !! however heres a few things i would make sure were fixed/100% tip top before i purchased:

Exhaust make sure its 100% - they say if it is rattling they will fix it, they fix it for a few months then it does it again, get them to get a new one - i went back to renault 3 times and complained, once waited 5 hours in the waiting room for them to weld it back - still rattling so i had to get a full stainless prospeedexhausts.co.uk ;)

Coil pack - bit of a lumpy idle and acceleration i took it in, this could have been spark plugs OR the coil pack - clever c**ts at renault said when we replace coil packs we always put in new spark plugs,,,, i was in a tricky situation, i should have said no use the old ones, i paid 70+ quid for spark plugs, they replaced the coil pack - problem is now GONE - however who paid for it ?? i hope it was the coil pack !!

Steering wheel - mine was okish when i bought it, seen better days now after 7 months, see if they will throw you on a new one if its gash.

Get them to put a 12 month MOT on then !! i had 3 months left on my mot they said let this run out and bring it back and we will put another one on for free,,, now the rear brakes were LOW when i bought it and it would not have passed an MOT - so i took it back 3 months later and they wanted 200+ for new rear disks i moaned at them saying this is not on ! they were like this when i wanted the MOT when i bought it - they did not replace them - however it passed the MOT !!

There only out to make money, they dont give a toss about you, so make sure you put your foot down, its a buyers market for 172's now so you can afford to be picy, they can afford to be generous with you ! :)
