thinking about 172

Hello...

im new to this forum so be patient with me...

im thinking about buying a clio 172 mk1. [2001]. iv owned many sports cars before including the RSI , alfa gtv , and a few others.

i thought about maybe going scooby way but i hate turbochargers..[its the lag really]...

but now im really in to a 172. but it seems this car [much like any other hot hatch] has many tech issues. some of them quite big.

i need an honest recommendation of what to expect of this car..

10x..

Hey fUbAr, I tried a 172 for the first time today :D , however it was only on my brothers new PS2 on the game GT concept or something lol.

They rattle they can break down but youll always look back when you sell it and want another.

The issues with the car arnt huge and wouldnt ever put me off buying one. After all my parents have owned some expensive cars and had nothing put problems forget the idea that german /japanese are reliable IMO buy the car for its enjoyment and the Clio had that in a large amount.

Im in exactly the same boat, only im getting rid of my Punto HGT! I know what you mean about the turbo lag. I agree with Tiff Needell when he said he finds forced induction engined cars boring due to them having no real power kick anywhere in the rev range. Ive been in my mates mk1 a few times now and really like it. I love the power kick at 5000 revs and the great handling. My mates doesnt really have any rattles and only minor things have gone wrong. Fiats are hardly the best built cars in the worlds either though, even though ive had no real problems with my HGT! As soon as it sells though, 172 mk1 here we come!

hi iv just got one its a mk2 172 cup 2003 but as for the (172) its great no lag as i hav a (escort rs turbo) clio has great handling and very powerfull when the revs get up high! and these cars love to be reved hard thats when they realy go! i havent had any rattles yet! but i find the interior of the mk2 to be solid so far but i dont know bout mk1s interior. not many little car like the clio can put out as much power standard and get great handling too...

realy its what you think of it when you drive it cos you can get a better buit car than the clio but if your lookin for power handlin then there great!.

or non (cup) mk2s with half leather and all the goodies and still very quick...

Well i have a 172 it has never let me down and doesnt rattle. the only thing that has ever gone wrong wth it has been a yaw sensor for the esp and the 4k rattle, which doesnt really bother me because mine lives above 4k!! Oh and the sensor was replace under warrAnty

but theyre sooooo much damn fun!! :D
I love my 172 never ever regret buying it. Personally I think there is no better way to some it up then the above.

You get rattles and the odd thing go wrong but the driving experience out ways this by far....... 3 years of ownership and still have a smile on my face every time I drive it.

172s dont realy have "big" tech issues, its more just little niggly things. Ive had mine for 18 months now and dont really regret buying it, there nothing that will go as fast or handle as well for the money. 2nd hand they are the best car money can buy. If I was gonna buy one I would buy 2nd hand to let someone else take the big hit of the depreciation lol.

we usually sl*g our cars off for not being perfect but at the end of the day weve all got big grins on our faces because of our little Rens. Its the dealer networks that are the major bugbear, but as yours will be out of warrenty i wouldnt see any probs, go for it.
