I have a Jbl sub and also a hifonics amp. I would suggest you have a more powerful amp coz your sub needs a load of juice. Its better to get a more powerful amp, than a sub being more powerful than the amp. If u catch me drift.

them subs are mint! they are wot im having cus mine aint power full enuf!

but u deff need a much bigger amp!

try the kenwood 1600w mono block digi amp! best amp i cme across for the money!

Im not made of money! lol that kenwood is like £450!

Well I was thinking 400W RMS would be loud enough but couldnt find another sub with less max that was also 400w rms, that was the only one i could find

Pah! kenwood?

Hifonics amps always kick out more power than thier ratings.

stick to the inital choice.

tomclio u aint heard my system! the amount of people i ahve turned to kenwood and my subs are sh*tty single voice coils! untill i get two of wot this fella is looking at!

A guy at the Modded Nationals last year (He might be there this year too) with a dark blue Escort RS Turbo van was running 4 of the big Kenwood monoblocks. He was using 4x Kicker SPL 15" sealed subs and was hitting 150.9db and sounded very clear with it.....so the amps cant be too shabby.

The only problem to get the most out of it you need to load the amp down to at least 2ohm and preferably 1ohm, meaning having 2 or 4 subs off it. I always think its a bit of a wste if you dont use the full potential of an amp.

The Hifonics might be a better choice running 400watts RMS @ 4ohms bridged. You can always get another one if you buy another sub in the future. If youre planning on buying 2 subs like you mentioned to me before then the Kenwood is a very good option too.

Will I have higher SPL and SQ than him with the hifonics amp and 1 of the JBL 1600 subs?

The main reason I am asking this is because I have heard his so it will give me something to compare against.

Its a bit difficult to say really. Technically you should have better SQ as single sub systems do tend to sound better unless set up perfectly.

Loudness wise it will be tight because he has more cone area but you have more power. I would think you would get slightly louder with your setup but you need a decent sub box to make sure you get the best out of the JBL. With a good box you could get significantly louder.
