Tie rod boot, changeable??

Alright folks [emoji5] looking for a bit of advice. When checking my car earlier, noticed the boot on my (passenger side) tie rod was split (see pic). Only apparent on a full right lock, anyone know if you can change JUST the boot?? or is it a complete jobby? Many thanks!

Yeah you can change them, gotta pop the track rod end off though.

Yes you can change just the boot. You'll need to take the track rod end and nut off but if you measure the thread and position of the TRE on the tie rod you're tracking should remain when you reassemble.

does anyone know if the boot is the same right through the clio range?? thought I could save myself 30 quid for a brand new one by getting one from a breakers yard from a (1.2, dci or whatever they have lurking around)

I'm not expert, and people may disagree, but might be worth changing the whole tie rod if it's been split for a while and dirt has got into the joint.

well that was potentially my thinking, if I bought a brand new boot for 30, may as well spend the 40 quid or so it would cost for the whole tie rod and boot, unsure how easy a job that would be though. I'm a fan of fiddling and doing little bits but my skills and knowledge are limited!

I'm in the process of doing mine and the job is quite easy, it's just getting all the rusted bolts etc off that's the problem. If you are replacing the boot, there's not much extra work to replace the whole tie rod, although you'll need a viscous spanner/removal tool to get the tie rod off and then alignment once it's been replaced.

experienced the issues in terms of seized bolts before when replacing the wheel bearings! trick is to cover the ones that look like they might be problematic with a bit of WD the night before, works a treat :wink: so if that's the most painful part I might have to give it a go! not liking the sound of the alignment thing but I suppose if I get it wrong I can run it out to a garage to polish up :up: cheers!

You don't want to replace the boot with one off a car in a breakers yard mate. It's a false economy and just not worth the hassle.

I had to change one on my DCI at the last MOT and paid £15 for a pair from a local motor factors. £30 seems a little high...

I just went straight to Renault parts, so that's probably a dealership price, I'll look around a bit harder, kindve just assumed it would a be a tricky part to find but maybe not!

To be fair, mine were a generic boot and did need cutting down slightly, but it would still be a better option than a second hand set in my opinion.

Try your nearest Euro Car Parts, I'm sure they'll have something in stock that is good quality and a reasonable price :up:
