timimg and AUX belts!!!

  clio sport 172, 2002
cutting a long story short. my 2002 sport has had its belts changed at 52,000miles
2,400miles later a strip off the AUX belt managed to enter the timing belt casing and got tangled up with the timing belt and f~~ked the engine.

a closer inspection by an engineer found that the AUX belt plastic tensioner pulley had a chip missing out of it resulting in the pulley wheel cutting into the belt and shredding (bearings in the pulley were in good working order) failure of the pulley its self was ruled out,

in the engineers report he claimes the chip missing of the pulley has caused the belts to do what they did, ie - chip being caused by poor work man ship by the garage

am taking the local garage to court at the mo, but there fighting it, saying that theses belt tensioners are known over a period of time to develop hairline cracks in them which are hard to see,

has any one ever had a AUX belt tensioner pulley wheel fall apart or heard clio sports have this problem???

i need as much feed back as possible please

thanks steve

The Aux belt kit comes with the tensioner pulley, which should have been changed.

Quite often a garage will just order the £17 belt on its own and not bother/ or realize.

^^^^ All these bargain cambelt offers you see usually only at best contain the aux belt and sometimes they don't even change that at all.
Full aux belt kit and cambelt kit or you may aswell not bother, when your spending hundreds it doesn't make that much difference.

My aux belt lost a small 1/16th peice 7inches long into the cam cover enough to let the belt slip (didnt snap). My tensioner wheel got damaged (lost a small section)because I released the spring rather than use a 3/8 drive to take up the tension.

Tensioner wheel assembly £130 however dealer told me to get an Aux belt kit with tensioner belt and forward pulley £110.

Yeah, or they should of at least recommended to you to change it at the same time. The aux belt, tensioner and idler should be changed every 36k or 5 years whichever is sooner.

Where did you take it??
