Timing out on my clio 182 ????

Hi all
recently bought a 2005 clio 182 cup after driving it back thought it seems quite sluggish to what it should be ?? The idle is very slightly lumpy but have no problems with cutting out car runs fine just seems underpowered to me ? The car has had new belt kit fitted 6 months ago by previous owner so I was wondering if the timing could be out ?
i have it booked in to ....got boost for dyno run on Tuesday to check bhp it's pushing out .... What sort of bhp figures should I expect to see from the dyno run ?

Who fitted the cambelt?

Healthy standard car on a dyno is probably between 170-180bhp.

I have a few customers from over South Wales, a few of them have all been to one garage to have belts done and each and every one was out.

Theres a fairly high chance its out, seems to be fairly common which is rather shitty given that it ruins the car. My Cup timing was out a few degrees, had it sorted a few weeks ago, utterly transforms the drive!

It wasn't mate no, i'll look at the receipt in the morning but i think it was £70. The core plugs (two plastic caps at the non cambelt end) of the engine need replaced as you sort of have to butcher them to get them out!

So you could pay a non specialist garage to do all the work for say half the price of a specialist, then take it to a specialist say the next day, pay them £70 to adjust it and bobs you teapot, sounds like a bargain lol.

You could.. But is it worth the risk of the engine going bang?

I have a receipt for £670 from last November from a seemingly reputable dealer in Leeds (from the guy i bought it from) - and the timing was still out ffs!

Naah i wouldnt mate, id be going to a local specialist off here, its just that i thought it would be so much more to sort, i doubt the engine would go bang if the timing was slightly out then you had it done the next day?

Ok thanks mate I'm gonna take it too have dyno run Tuesday see if the powers down first then address the problem from there like I said the car runs very smooth through all gears but just seems lacking I used to have impreza and I've raced many clio sports ( never broke speed limit Lol ) and couldn't really shake them off they were always quick accelerating but there's no way this would come anywhere near that .... If timing is out will it make big difference to bhp reading ?

I think fred said it can be as much as 10-15bhp if its out!

I've had a 182 in that was down to 150bhp because the timing was out, I corrected it and it did 185.

FLOL at this forum just as cliosport gets over DEPHASER PANIC !
All of a sudden everbody seems to think that just because there car isn't pulling like it should there timing must be out !
Don't forget how old 1*2's are now could be anyone of a number of things other than timing !

It could be other things, but given that these are now old cheap cars a lot of them have been to mechanics who dont quite get exactly how critical the cam timing is, and as a response a large percentage of the ones that dont go as they should do, its cause of the cam timing.

Just cause its a "CS craze" doesnt mean its not actually indicative of the real world issues these cars have.

TBH I dont think its easy at all, you drop your car off going slow, you pick it up going a lot better, if its not the timing they changed to sort it and they said it was, then what did they do instead?

Yeah it could be but that's why I'm looking to get it checked good place to start I think ....... 90% of the threads I've read regarding loss of power and lumpy idle turns out to be cam timing problems so think this May be first port of call ....

Ive just booked mine in to be done by dan. Belts and dephaser for 600. To be honest thats no exspensive as half the tards charge 500 to f**k it up.

Just came back from gotboost Bridgend after dyno run ... My 182 is putting out 169 bhp what he said he would expect to see he has had a few in ......141 ftlb of torque also ... He said although my idle is lumpy in his opinion my timing is ok all all other reading seems fine so he suggested trying to clean out throttle body to see if this would improve this ... No diagnostic readings at all

They are generally a bit lumpy on the standard map with age.

RS tuner it and they normally idle fine.

I'm not too good at reading these printouts but it says ..... EST FLY BHP MAX 169 bhp not sure if that's what your after ???
he did explain all print out but went straight over my head lol

The fly figure is before transmission loss (gearbox). Post a picture of the graph?

Belt snapped on my old one under warranty, so the top end was replaced by dealer. For years it then ran around with the timing out, but had all the faults the OP reported. Birchdown put it right and it was like a different car.
