To do a 172 T or not to do 172 T? Dilema!

  Clio RS Mk1
Go for it? Or not?

First of all I'm not thinking about T kit, like BB's, K-TEC's, etc...

Everything on my own!

How much HP can original gearbox handle?

I aim to 400+ HP or rather not do anything at all.

Your advice?

PS: I read alot about 172 T allready done. But as I ask for pics of maniford, turbine, etc..noone is prepared to share them. Why? Is is a secret?
I share everthing I do (on my own) with others. I'm happy to help someone, specially if it would save your time and efford.

I don't have money for BB's, K-TEC's,... kit so that's why I tune my cars on my own (kits are expensive!) and any help is very appreciated.

I wouldn't but if you know what you're doing and are capable - then why the hell not. :)

to be honest i reckon you wouldnt get 400bhp at the end of it all - plus way too much power for the car unless you uprated absolutely everything - the ktec 172 turbo is brill (has 239bhp) and will actually be able to beat a clio V6 in a sprint - insane! so i recommend you turbo it if your willing to do it all yourself your a brave man.

Mind you Ktec charge 5 grand for their turbo conversion - madness!

If you dont mind throwing your money away, and time why the hell not. Dont let people put you off if you want to do it.:D

Convert it to 4 wheel drive too.

  RB 200 Cup!
actually if you got a clio sport and turboed it the cost would be much less than a standard V6 and would be quicker - seriously check out k-tec's turbo 172

A bit of history:

We put a T3 turbo on 1.8l N/A Mazda Miata. Tested @1.o, 1.3 bar boost. Insane. So we know what we are doing.

I would get through alot cheaper than Ł6k!! Still I have a minor problem - leak of knowledge about Renault parts. Specially gearbox.

That's why I turned to you guys. And when I heard that there is allready a 172 T, i wanted pictures...as much as possible. To see, to learn, to do it on my own. From maniford to IC...

Only thing I'm worried about is gearbox. Coz new one is atleast Ł2.ooo here in Slovenia. And I wouldn't be happy if I broke this one.

Why not some other car or V6. Insurance for V6 would kill me. And first of all it would cost me atleast Ł14.5oo. Not interested in this combination at all!

The gearbox won't last very long. Well the diff will go first. Standard power is enough to kill them.

400 BHP....front wheel drive....small car.........Mental! Sounds like a big job to make it driveable

if youve got concerns about the gearbox just email K-tec, proabbly the best renault specialist in this country and ask how they uprated their show car - ive always found em helpful and their advice is spot on

id say go for it mate, BB's 172 turbo runs 280bhp i think and they say that this is enough for the gearbox, so to be honest your not going to get much more than 300bhp from the gearbox and even at that its not going to last too long.

good luck if you decide to go for it

EDIT: HERE you go mate

@martin: Thanks, I saw that, but no word about diff or gearbox tho :(

Allready sent mail to k-tec. we'll see.

you won't see much past 10000miles from a JC5 gearbox

the only reason i'm using the Megane RS parts is the gearbox is built to take upwards of 300NM

see below (MEgane RS ND0 gearox is the bigger one, the smaller one is a std JC5 172 box)

Replay from k-tec:
"Hello, we will be testing the diff at the end of this month as we will also be aiming for 400bhp. I am afraid I will not have results for a few weeks so please feel free to contact me in early April."

So lets wait till april ;)

@Fred: Thanks mate,
Looks bigger, stroneger. tell me is this mounted on your 172? Does it fit (screw to screw) or do you need to modify mounting spots?

  Lionel Richie
no i'm using the F4R T engine which has a wide face block and a much stronger bottom end

same engines as Vel Satis, laguna and Megane sport and the RS

the JC5 129 box is terrible, with 400bhp it'll explode! (i've seen then give up with just 200bhp)

i don't like the idea of having a weak link in the equation, its my only gripe with the turbo conversions BB and K-tec do, why spend £7K if your gearbox is going to blow up??? the stuff they do is good, mine will be better ;)

  Megane Trophy
Fred that megane box - does it just go straight on ?

Im s**t scared about my box going, cars done 40k now and i cant face a 1k bill for a new box! There hardly the bits u see laying around either

  Lionel Richie
nope, the megane box DOESN'T fit the 172/182 engines, you need to use the megane engine also (wider faced block)

the megane box alone is £1K!

  Megane Trophy
Bloody Hell,
Im saving up for the cambelt at the moment!
I better keep some money spare just in case anything serious does happen
