Trackday Tyres to be Outlawed?

Just reading in this months EVO...

Says that by November 2012 like likes of the R888 and the Pilot Sport Cup. It's not all bad though... the new legislation will also put a stop to the use of cheap & poor performing road tyres.

Semi slicks for day to day use are pisch tbh! Although i don't consider the PSC's to be in the same class as the R888's!!

R888s are great in the wet, just dodge the puddles and let a bit of heat get in them first.

wet + cold = dangerous.

fact of the matter is... they can be dangerous in the wrong hands but so can any car, can't it?

Tyre technology will have moved on yet again by 2012. Other trackday tyres will have superseded the likes of R888's by then, making this irrelevant.
 
does anyone know what the 'facts/figures' behind the justification for this are? something to do with the minimal tread pattern?
ed. that sounds a bit woolly - i mean, how are they going to draw the distinction between track tyres and road tyres?

brake pads next! ;)

Tread depth, compound, pattern, etc. Any number of ways really.

The regulations governing tyres will probably be updated - ECE Regulation 30, 30.01, 30.02 or 54 or of EC Directive 92/23.

apparantly when you bought a CSL with cup tyres you had to sign a disclaimer before you could drive away on them.

I'm sure there'll still be the facility to use them on track. Anyone that read about the R26R going off on that island can't honestly believe they are safe for road use IMO.

I havent had a problem with them and was there at that meet, i went round that roundabout at a fair lick and had no problems! I used to have a 200bhp kit car on road tyres that was lethal in the wet! Its more down to the driver and the car then the tyres! imo of course!! Nearly slid off the road in my lupo gti the other day and was only going 15mph think i hit some diesel - so many factors and not just the tyres!
 
i don't think they're sensible for use exclusively as road tyres either, but lots of people will want to wear them on road as they travel to and from events/track days

how do rally cars get about on the (public) link sections? is it going to cause them a problem?

i suppose there's already a distinction in the MSA tyre lists, but can't see the powers-that-be using those

just interested, but guess it's a way off yet

i had some of those on my mini.

this could be 'good', actually; as manufacturers needn't be obliged to produce tyres that meet the minimum tread for road use?

Yes but what about off raod tyres ie 4x4 tyres the same rules should apply to them as they are the complete opposite less rubber in contact on the road so in good conditions they are worse than a road tyre.
 
ban 4x4s? long overdue

guess it's v early days yet, but sounds as though it'd have repercussions in a few fields

TRACKDAY TYRES TO BE OUTLAWED
New safety regulations spell the end for extreme road-legal rubber

New legislation on tyre labelling and accompanying minimum standards to be introduced simultaneously in November 2012 will effectively end the production of road-legal trackday tyres. Tyres likely to be axed include the Dunlop Direzza, Toyo R888 (currently available on the Renaultsport Megane R26.R), Michelin Pilot Sport Cup (Porsche GT3 & GT2) and AVON ACB10 (Caterham), along with a host of others.

The aim of the new regulation is to both raise all-round performance standards and to give buyers a greater understanding of the performance and environmental impact of each particular tyre before purchase. All road-legal tyres will have to display rating figures for rolling resistance (read: fuel efficiency), external noise and wet grip, and while the rating system and minimum levels have yet to be set, it is unlikely that track-biased tyres will be able to pass on all counts.

Tyres manufacturers are currently lobbying the European Parliament, but it will be very difficult for them to make a successful argument for tyres that allow drivers to corner faster in the dry but which offer a significantly lower level of performance the moment the surface becomes damp.

It is expected that trackday tyres will fall foul of the other parameters too, so their demise is something their manufacturers are already preparing for. James Bailed (nice chap!), Dunlop's PR chief, believes it highly unlikely that trackday tyres will continue in their current form, although the company's official position is that these regulations are positive as they will also remove poor performing cheap road tyres from the market (bye bye ditch finders!) In its own braking tests the difference between the best and worst tyres fitted to a Mondeo stopping from 50mph on a wet surface was as much as five car lengths...

Porsche feels it's too early to comment and that at this stage it is still a matter for the tyre companies. Once the regulations have been set, the German car maker will still request an appropriate level of performance from Michelin for its top models.

So what does the future hold? There will still be high-performance tyres made from a race-style compound though they are likely to have regular road-car tread patterns. However, they won't be as fast or responsive as the current crop of trackday tyres, and for those of us who enjoy extra performance and challenge present by thisa specialist rubber that's a real shame.

I copied that word for word as I couldn't find it on the net. Just means you'll need a set of road legal tyres to get you to the venue or a trailer...I'm sure manufacturers will work around it. Never seen any data on performance of say an R888 vs. T1-R or Michelin PE2 vs. Pilot Cup Sport...I'm not sure how noise is effect by contract area/tread pattern.

If we're all in lighter cars in future I'm sure tyre technology can catch up again.
 
they'll be forced to come up with something new that fits in, but 3yrs isn't really far at all (remember what we were using three years ago? yes, we're still using them!). on the face of it, this seems fairly interesting as tyres go

makes do differance, tyre gives more grip, i still drive the same. how many CSL owners use cups as an every day tyre??

A bit different from the likes of me though.

I have a dedicated track car that runs 888's and I drive it to track and back again.

If this poxy law comes into place, I've got to spend out on a spare set of road wheels and tyres just to get there and back!!!

Will the R888's make you drive any better? no! the tyres just offer more grip.
Will the level of fun you have on said track day change?i doubt it!

My car is COMPLETELY different without those 888's.

Its a s**t law, you cannot argue that.
