Trophy #185's story

Only way to have a track car ;-)

Liking the brake upgrade mate. I'm at the stage where I need to refurb my calipers, so its now a toss up between Brembo upgrade or standard refurb???

The only thing that's stopping me is that the standard calipers with the RC6 or RC8 pads are unbelievable, they grip like no other.... Have you seen any improvement? It may be hard to guage with road pads or even ds 2500 as the Carbon Lorraines seem to be a different level of bite over Ferodo.....

Would be good to get your feedback, cheers.
Thanks  Had similar sittuation when I came to change them with refurbishing standards and retaining Pagid pads or upgrade and have to change pad brand.

Unfortunately with other issues since they've been fitted I haven't been able to track or propperly run them but they're deffinately 'better' they just seemed to bite harder and sooner then before and thats with Ferodo DS1.11 pads that seem to want a good amount of heat into them. Used to run Pagid RS4-2 pads.

I can't wait to try them out on track, on road when provoking them they're overkill (wanting to lock up) so with sticky rubber on track I'm looking forward to them

I'm still on the standard Master Cylinder too, have got a Clio 197/200 one but I like a longer pedal so probably will stay with that.

Sorry I can't give you better feedback but luck hasn't been with me recently, issue with injector and broken/noisey alternator preventing me from getting on track and even on the road to test them.

No probs mate, the feedback from others is positive, but on the basis I lock up all the time, the standards seem to do the job.... But like most modifications your brembos look amazing, so that's half the issue lol, more shiny bits!! And if I'm spending money to refurb or replace the standard ones should I replace them with an upgrade that looks as good as yours does :) ?? Decisions decisions!!

Agree, took me years to justify mine, new pads and discs along with rebuilding standards were mine, can't ignore the looks either Haha. Pad changes are 2 min job now too if you need more justification ;)

Lol, that could help at the track as mine is track only......! Of course on the flip side as its track they don't have to look good they just have to work lol

Nice update, Keith. It's a real shame you were unable to join us for the Clio Trophy meet; it was a fantastic weekend! :)

@cpaterson76 - I have a newly refurbed set of stock calipers if you are interested. Minty fresh and with new seals, etc. Still wrapped and unused.

You up and running again mate?
No not yet mate. Seems to be running ok now alternator wise, sound wise it's awful, but proves my suspicion with bearings. Will be getting new cambelt same time most likely too as due so may have been tempted to window shop with head work and top end stuff too . . . probably wont at moment as extra cost of new cambelt when I get to that isn't much in big picture as engine is sweet as a nut except of the alternator.

Just read through this all. Lovely trophy! Going back to the first page when you updated all your engine mounts. Was it an updated gearbox to subframe mount you used too?

Cheers

Thank you Plees. No that was a standard rubber mount. Not sure if anyone does an uprated one now but there were none back then. The uprated vibratecknik ones were the upper engine and upper gearbox, then the powerflex rear (dogbone) mount.

@Keith185 cheers for the reply. I'm doing the same and upgrading my engine mounts. Got vibratechnics on the way and just wondered if that was an updated lower one too. Cheers

March- April 2016

First update of the year, had been trying to get some motivation or as I'd say in Welsh 'Mynadd' to change the Alternator. Finally got my arse in gear as I had started looking at some trackday dates for this year.

Had initially thought of taking the whole bumper off but more I looked the more unnecessary it seemed to be if I could just get the grill off instead, would save me having to jack car up to get at the bumper bolts etc etc.

Off with the grill, fuel rail guard and cracked on with getting it out. What a right pain it was, the long lower bolt just did not want to slide out and then the joy of thrying to get the tension off the belt. Had bought a tool but that was about as much use as a normal ratchet with the space and the angle.

Was begining to loose temper with it but a quick cup of tea and a post on here, thanks to @NorthloopCup 's reply and got into the jubilee bin and got the tension taken off and after swearing some more and wrecking my hands I got to this stage late afternoon.

Alternator had deffinately seen better days, bearing shot and the nice smell of burnt windings.

IMG_0787 by KeithRoberts185, on Flickr

Literally 30 seconds to get new one in through hole and located compared to about 10min of cursing getting old out and few min later all done. Lug was fine too, some corrosion on nut but fine otherwise.

IMG_0824 by KeithRoberts185, on Flickr

Onto following week and now with it running again needed to sort the stuttering issue that I had had before alternator failed. Was only noticable on load between 1-2k rpm.

Pretty certain it was one of two things, 1 ignition issue or 2 injector issue. I wasn't getting any EML up and there weren't any codes saved so first thing I wanted to eliminate was an injector issue with the spray pattern.

Had a spare set and cleaned them up in an ultrasonic bath followed by bench testing them at work to make sure they sprayed as best as I could with what I had. Unfortunately this didn't solve the problem although it was slightly better.

Next up as it needed some anyway was a nice new set of plugs. Old ones all looked pretty good for age/mileage but changed anyway. Didn't make any difference.

IMG_0831 (5) by KeithRoberts185, on Flickr

So next step was the coil pack and leads and again had a spare set from years ago that I had to go digging for, put them on and bye bye stutter  From looking at the coil pack I'd have said it was most likely this as underneath out could see the casing pulling away slightly from the insulating moulding. For peace of mind and they're not much got a nice brand new coil pack and leads fitted (tbh they were on cards to be changed soon anyway)

All running great. Next on job list was a quick clean to the air fillter, unfortunately I was greeted to this ...

26308046520_931f46be6a_b.jpg
IMG_0905 by KeithRoberts185, on Flickr

Was not happy, but from looking at it and inside the airbox I can only put it down to over oiling and that cars been standing a bit last year or so meaning the oils pooled at lowest point in fillter and settled there as rest of fillter was fine. So got online to merlin motorsport and couple days later had new one. For future referance its a JC60 cylindrical with an 70mm ID inside the Maxogen

Another spare to add to the collection off good old eBay, very little curbing and very light where it is. Got it for a good price too complete with center cap..

Got little red booked into the guys at Birchdown next month for the Belts , dephaser (which I almost forgot I had bought) waterpump, rear calipers, disc, pads and handbrake cables along with engine and gearbox oil change.

Then trackday at Ty Croes - Anglesey in June.

One of my little parts collection for Birchdown

Not much of an update really but has taken some time, given it it's first wash this year. Rinse, Snow foam, iron x, wash and clay. Wheels gone over. Followed by going over body with a DA using Megs cutting compound, zaino polish and sealant the following weekends. (Used the Fx kit too)

Not perfect but no point going to that level with way it gets used imo.

One little other job done and that was to fit some new rubber/silicon stops for the fuel filler cap. Now the cap sits flush one more.

All done and ready to take to Birchdown end of the week :)

Really nice car and thanks for documenting it all so thoroughly!

Found this thread linked elsewhere when looking for info on the Yanoo Stiff Shift.

As an aside, do all trophys have a non colour coded boot handle?

Finally got round to updating my thread, or atleast bring it up into this year. Just been little jobs here and there and getting it out.

May 2016

Wanted some adjustment on the rear and to get the standard ones off and kept safe. Had been toying with getting Koni's on the rear for a while and finally got round to ordering them.

Great day with great weather. Can't seem to find any photos from the day other than the above.

July 2016

After the trackday decided to order a few bits from Pure Motorsport (Still yet to get around to fitting these lol.) Great finish on them as usual.

August 2016

With MOT due, needed some new boots and decided to try Bridgestone RE002 as they looked bit more a between track tyre and normal Michelin PS3 I used before. Plus the price differential was significant on a set of 4 with the Michelins having gone up a lot since last ones I bought.

After running a Citroen C1 for over 3 years I decided I wanted something nicer to drive on the A55 and that would give me better MPG (getting old now).

Can't ing the praise of the C1 tbh, was cheap to run having only needed tyres, oil change, 1 back box, 1 set of discs and pads on front and rear wheel bearing since I had it and never let me down once while being fun to drive for such a small 'city car'.

The new car shown below, love it. Lovely to drive, handles well and gives me great MPG.

With last trackday highlighting the rear exhaust mounts being past their best especially around Church corner I ordered some powerflex exhaust bushes and got around to sorting out the rust on the rear hangers along with tacking the (un)captive nuts on.

Bilt hamber deox used to get rid of any rust.

Rubber burnt off in a furnace at my old work, then realised you actually don't need to get rid of all the rubber as if you do the bushes are undersize, so had to shim the bushes to get them tight with rubber (only few mm).

This day was first time out with my brother in his Impreza since he's had some work done on his engine, fair to say my 182 french horses struggle on straights vs almost 400 Japanese ones but Clio makes up for it in and through corners, thanks to my track tyres vs sports ones to help too.

Decided to try something, seeing as the handles are mounted onto the door and there is a panel gap (ever so slightly) I tried to spray them in sittu. Masking wasn't an issue, only concern was the final coat of lacquer and whether I'd have a clean line.

Very happy with how they turned out, will see how they last but the time and hassle I saved in taking door cards off and all I can't be happier with the finish.

One photo, last year I left my job in order to work back home again, and by home I mean the old aluminium smelter I was an apprentice at and worked until 2013, when I left when it closed down to go work at a steel manufacturer. back home to help start and be part of a new chapter on Anglesey. Behind is now a concrete pad where once stood the huge casthouse I worked at in the engineering department.

Thanks :) was surprised tbh, worth a try before I took them off car then didn't have to :) How's you and car?
I think I may take a leaf out of your book and try the same once the T is home... :) I'm good thanks, Keith. Busy as ever but no complaints. As for the car, well, same old story. Still no sign of it and I don't really know what to do.
