Trophy #229: The Diary

I can't do anything right now as the weather is terrible out there, so thought I'd set up a diary thread dead early.

So, my old clio I sold back in June/July time. Never regretted selling a car so much :(

Sold it as I bought this on a whim, a good car for what it is, but not really for me. Its fast, handles well, but isn't exactly fun to drive...

So I got a bit bored and traded it for this, R26. Great car tbh, well made imo, good handing, fast, roomy, comfortable.

But, still not as fun as the clio, probably about to drop in value pretty sharpish, and I really wanted to downgrade to get a bit of money in the bank.

Had a few offers for trades, none really stood out. I wanted a good condition, low mileage clio in a good colour (i.e not arctic or silver :quiet:)

Got an offer on boxing day for a trophy though. Looked a bit rough in the picture, but on paper sounded quite good, and the guy selling it seemed a sound enough person (despite being scottish). We made a deal, managed to squeeze a little more cash out of him too ;)

So today I drove all the way to Carlisle to see each others cars and we were happy do the deal, so here it is, looking very sorry for itself:

So, one very filthy clio.

It needs a couple of bits doing to it, the biggest being a new steering wheel. But it has only got 38K on the clock, had the suspension refurbished 12 months ago at 32K miles, had both belt kits done around the same time by the main dealer, and the same main dealer has looked after it since new.

It's one previous owner, the first owner has even written in the back of the handbook every time he did something/had something done which is nice too :)

I didn't achieve a huge amount of money in the bank after all, not compared to if I has got a 172 cup, but its a car I have wanted to own for a while, a lot of fun to drive (I got to drive a pretty empty A65 home in it :approve:), and definitely a keeper.

So, my plans are to keep/make it pretty standard, and do the following ASAP:

Fit new bulbs all round, already ordered some nice white one's which a lot of the Golf GTi boys use
New/Refurbished Steering Wheel
Change the gash stereo to my own BT HU
Remove carbon bonnet and replace original (which was provided)
Remove carbon bullets and diamond and replace originals (also provided)
Re fit CAT, as it currently has a decat which is too loud for my delicate ears (CAT provided too)
Give it a really good clean, inside and out

Then enjoy it, keep it serviced, drive it, take pictures of it!

it does look very sorry for itself, what was the last owner thinking by putting that on it ill never know. your plans seem good for it. been through some cars. your rb is the pick of the bunch for me

Is the current bonnet even carbon? It looks like it's just grey, maybe its the rain.

Hope you enjoy it though, with 38k on the clock that's health to enjoy! :D

  172 Cup
Congrats on aquiring a fine handling car (loved my brothers Trophy!), once it has the standard bonnet back on your onto a winner ;)

Your RB, and R26 was lovely so im sure you will get this upto the same standard. Enjoy mate.

Bonnet is real carbon, and is already prove sold! I was surprised how light it is.

Already done one little job this afternoon, replaced gash good mans stereo with my BT HU. Still quite chav, but at least it's half decent chav ;)

Nice find. Once you've got rid of the bonnet and the bullets it'll look a million times better!

Cheers, yeh, I think its got so much potential.

Just got to see past its small (profitable ;)) imperfections.

Been reading your thread for inspiration, yours looks so nice all polished up :approve:

My mate wants a CF bonnet so give us a shout if/when you sell it. x

I'll put you on my growing list of people wanting it, I'm pretty sure the first guy will pick it up though.

Awesome. Needs more pics though tbf ;) ...

Look forwards to seeing it in person at some point.

Don't go worrying about pics ;)

Looks more inferno then trophy in that pic!

Looking forward to seeing it at some meets.

Crap iPhone pic, will be at the meet next week :)

You could have that looking lovely in a day if you have got all the bits, weather permitting I'm sure you will.

I agreed to buy a BG 182 today so it didn't take me long to come back either.

Your worse than me!

Yep, just need some good weather. Replace bonnet and badges, really good polish and replace the plates.

I really want a fabia vrs but I know for similar money I could have another trophy....hmm tempting. How do you find the handling compared with your old 182?

No it hasn't, I dont find the intermittent interval bad at all so dont think I'm going to bother with it.

It was wet yesterday, but I still tried to push it a little and handling is much improved over my old cup'ed 182. The biggest improvements are the speed you can turn in at, and it just goes where you want, body roll is very little too which suits me.

If your looking at a VRS because of fuel economy, the trophy averaged 39mpg yesterday. Did a little bit of motorway, a lot of twisty A road, and some town/traffic driving too.

The trophy would temp me also. Depends what you're after though. The Fabia IMO is so easy to drive compared to the 1*2 and does return higher MPG.

I'll be following this thread, as I do like trophies.

Mike, does yours have the wiper mod? If it doesn't I have a spare that I'll fit for you if you want? Or you can have it.

Also if you want it PC'ing...
