Trophy vs 197 Cup my view.

Take it the gearbox on the 197 is better then?

182s is w**k, the generall notchyness is annoying me greatly at the moment.

182s is ok IMO, just nothing to write home about. Any weakness is probably mainly due to driver error hehe.

The 197 is awesome, light, smooth and super short shift, probably one of the best gearboxes I've ever used.

The 1*2's could outbrake a 996 carrera, nothing wrong with them, just the 197's are better.

I took an R26 and R27 out today and I was very impressed with the R27. I did back to back runs in both cars down the same roads. Performance wise I could not tell any difference at all. Corner speeds where pretty much exact. On a very tight left corner I could feel the R26 LSD dig in and pull me round the corner but the R27 was just as competant but took a wider line.

The R26 felt very laggy, the power delivery seemed very slow; as if there was a delay from pressing the accelerator to when the power finally came in. It seemed very strange. The service light was on and it did not have exaltos on the front, I think one of the tyres may have been under inflated to. I was also very surprised at how quiet the R26 was, when the dealer pulled it round it sounded loud but you couldn't hear this inside.

The R27 felt very rapid, it reved more keenly than the R26 and when you pin the accelerator the noise is fantastic. The cornering speeds on the country road part of the test drive, allowed me to feel the movement of the car well and the chassis and steering feel very well connected. The gearbox of the R27 was excellent, a very quick and precise change whereas the R26 felt very slack, a bit like 172/182. The brakes on both cars where a cut above my 182 and I felt as if they where similar.

Overall, I think I d go for the R27. My dilemma is the Alien Green 200 and that both the R26 and R27 did not feel as lairy as my 182. Or more as engaging/playful as my 182. I cant fault the build quality on both the R26 and R27, the only issue I could see was the wear on the R27 recaros on the drivers seat and the smell of child sick in the back!!

I am not completely sold on either car and I would want another test drive before I lay the cash out. I also drove a mini cooper s today, which was very good. The car had a lot of feel and I reckon I could have really pushed on on some round abouts. It seemed to stay very planted and felt a very nibble car. However, the power delivery, to me, seemed really slow. Is this just me????

Sounds like a fair review, the R26 sounds like an iffy one. The R26 is quicker, even more so if the roads are damp.

Met one of my pals who has recently test drove an R26 and he said the same. I am looking to test drive another as it has been my dream car for 2 years now and I was pretty gutted yeaterday after my test drive.

I also had a go in a dc2 last night. All I can say is they don't make em like they used to!!!!

No the Trophy has the cup chassis, i think. The Trophy is about the Sachs dampers, Turinis, Recaros and V6 spoiler.

Dampers = part of the chassis, the way it handles, otherwise you cuold say all clios share the same chassis as the shell is the same.

I was trying to say the wider stance & suspension setup of the 197 more than makes up for the Sach dampers of the Trophy.

Having owned a Trophy for 2 yrs (14,000 miles of road & lots of trackdays)& not just had a go in one i can tell the 197 is an excellent setup.

You can take me for a spin sometime steve!

Any time mate, hows the 'M'?

Oh yea, the 197 is a step up from the Trophy (but the Trophy is supposed to be the ultimate Phase 2 ClioSport, that's what I meant; if the chassis is a let down on that then there isn't much left hehe).

The wider track helps but the change in the front suspension design gives the biggest impression of stability I reckon. You also get the feel but without the torque-steer.

Interesting Steve, knew youd been looking for some time but finally made the plunge !
Did you drive the r26 at all as wondering what your thoughts were ?
I drive the 197 cup and r26 at bedford last year and loved them both, just the r26 more, especially grip, although it was damp.
Good contructive review btw :)

Nice one Steve. As you know from all your questioning, my thoughts on the Cup over the Trophy/182/172 I've previously owned are exactly the same.

It's taken you long enough to get one though. lol

Still not into the mk3 look yet. Mk3's only look good when they are slamed as they look wide and muscular.

And the mk3 ph2 looks even worse! guess I will have to see one in the flesh. Out of all the clio sports the mk2 ph2 is the better looking car.

I do not dispute that the 197 is a step up in terms of performance but the looks and poor fuel consumption puts me off.

Yes it did take a while  , no big loss through the winter not having to keep a new car clean.

Spent a couple of hours in both cars on & off track.

The r26 is a good car but just decided the revy nature of the 197 suited my driving style better.
After Silverstone last friday defo reassures me i made the right decision. Once i sort out the tyres it should suit me down to the ground & as for running costs no different so far to my Trophy.

IMO the ride height looks spot on to me and they look great. The 16v looks great in it's own right, as does the facelifted ClioSport 172/182, but park either next to a 197 and they suddenly date.

Indeed. I really dont know why people bang on about mpg on a 197..... its what, a tenner if that a week more expensive imo..... I get around 27-28mpg, with a good mix of driving. My 172 Cup and 182 averaged 32ish, so thats a 4 mile difference per gallon? All the CS millionares probably loose that tenner down the sofa each night?

Dont fight the change ;)
