Two Bassetts and a Cockapoo

I'm down at my dads place in Ruyton XI Towns at the moment with the mrs and her Cockapoo. My dad has a pair of Bassett hounds and today we all went for a walk up one of the nearby hills.

I took advantage of the opportunity to take the nifty fifty and get some shots while we were out. I'm not fully happy with the sharpness of the lens at f/1.8; I'm gettting lovely DoF but it's not fully sharp at the focal point, it's fine at f/8.0 but of course I lose a lot of the DoF that I really do like.

Anyway, they've been edited for colour in LR5.

As for your sharpness query, Eddie, most fast 50’s stuggle with sharpness. You’d need the 50mm F1.2L to have anything near sharp for a 50 at wider apertures really. So I wouldn’t dwell on it too much, just give it a bit of sharpening in Lightroom.

You might want to see if it’s focussing correctly also if it is that soft, photos such as No.3 in this set are out of focus and so it may just be the image being slightly out of focus that is causing the impression of softness. This could either be that the AF isn’t very good, or there is a front/back focussing issue.

Long story short, try placing the camera on a flat surface or a tripod, and focus on something with a surface in and behind the subject so that if it is front focussing you will see that the bit of the surface in front of the subject is sharp and the subject is blurry. This is the only way to cancel out all of the variables in this issue really.

I would try as Nial suggested I just had to dial in -8 af micro adjustment on an older minolta lens.

I noticed that my 50 was off with auto focus too yesterday. Just used manual in the end but can get pretty annoying. It's still soft though on 1.8.
I'll give the above a go. I'm sure you can micro adjust them though can you?
