Unwell 182 :-(

  Clio 182 Cup
Last Sunday, on the M40, (going to pick my son up) in the fast lane, suddenly a noticeable BANG from under the bonnet, no power :-( managed to get across to the hard shoulder, tried to start, engine won't turn over. Phoned RAC, when they arrived, we tried rocking the car in gear, cams and crank moving, but not much :-(

13 days prior had the following genuine Renault parts fitted by a well known specialist; cambelt, dephaser, cambelt tensioner, aux belt, aux belt tensioner, oil and filter, NGK plugs and NS driveshaft and gearbox oil.

Something has gone seriously wrong. And gutted that I haven't had her over Christmas.

Car was recovered to the specialist, where one of their technicians kindly came and released one of their courtesy cars.

Place your bets..... Won't find out until New year what's wrong.....

That doesn't sound good, atleast it was done by a specialist so you have that to comfort you and the fact that it was all Renault parts. I'm guessing the specialist was KTR and if it was I am sure they will see you right.

I'm not blaming them in any way until its investigated, as I know and trust the technician who worked on it. Their customer service has been second to none in my experience with them.

Just gutted.

Well if its done valves, might look at the 438's now....

the obvious bet would be timing belt failure, but if the cams were moving the belt must still be on. my bet is dropped a valve. let us know what you find out.

well at least you should be covered by 12months parts and labour warranty (genuine parts come with a fitted part warranty, but the car HAS to be inspected by the main dealers if you have an issue, well that's the case with us anyway!)

She's dropped a valve

Gutted.....

What to do.....? Should I repair her, or finance a 197/200?

Sorry to hear mate.

You must like the car as you decided to spend a few quid getting the belts and that done. Get a quote for a repair or a replacement engine off Nick above and see what's what.

See what the garage says first when you go down

Thanks G 172, and Nick 172 Cup- will keep you all posted.

Yes. Hadn't really been anywhere before then.

Was hoping you didnt reply with yes..... i reckon after you had your belt done, the timing was out slightly, a motorway run always shows these up if timings out, valve opend, piston came up, & mashed your engine. Seen it many times sadly to say :(:(

Forgive me-

Considerating the belts have just been done- is there a link between the valve going & the belts- or is it bad luck?

Id go with bad luck unless the timing was so far out pistons were coming into contact with valves... but they should have been able to hear that..

Really?

I take it the car ran/sounded fine after the belt??, I would think its unlikely a problem with the belt.

We had one a few years ago, went around 3 months after belt kits, dropped a valve and destroyed its self!!

Good luck with the repair. :)

The timing would have to be out by quite a way for that to happen? Also surely its not the speed of the car but the RPM of the engine that would show up such a fault. As the RPM increases I guess the pistons stretch further up the bore at TDC, but we're talking less than 1mm right? I'd still be looking at the timing of the belt once the engine comes out, just for sanity

That sound like what happened, thank you for the good will. Smooth and quiet after belt change. ECU map changed after belt change as it wasn't running right.

yes sorry to say :( thats why i asked about the motorway run. Again its a possibility, im guessing this is the cause, but i would check the timing anyway to see if it is out.
Engine's dont normally drop a valve for no reason.

Mmmmm anyone else had a failure on standard engine?

its common the head drops off the valve, i had a weird one on saturday, drove it into the workshop all fine, bit rough but the timing was out and the dephaser knackered, changed the belt and dephaser, started it up with an instant misfire, alot of head scratching later it had 1 ever so slightly bent inlet valve (and i mean f**k all) so sorted the valve and now the tappets are rattling like hell apparently, and they NEVER fail!

I can't figure out how any of it happened, i think i know how to change belts of these by now LOL! Annoyingly it has all happened in my care, luckily the customer has been good about it and i'm sorting it all £FOC (he's paying for the bits as its "one of them cars" which is fair)

Exactly my point, timing was out, it had touched a valve previously.
