Urgent help needed removing steering wheel.

So I'm following some of the guides I here. I've got the airbag out. I've unplugged the grey clip with the black and red wires. But there is another clip on the left hand side too.

Theres been no mention of this is any of the other guides. It's not easy to unplug either.

Does anyone know what it's for?? Or an easy way of unplugging it without breaking anything?

i'll try and upload a pic now.

Cheers

If its a 182 it will be the cruise wiring.

Re: Urgent help needed removing sterling wheel.

Are you sure you pulled all the wires and plugs back through?

Re: Urgent help needed removing sterling wheel.

Also, if I remember correctly the squib has slots in it that marry up to the wheel, so you have to make sure you are putting it back in at the right angle.

Urgent help needed removing sterling wheel.

Put the bolt in and tighten. It'll pull the wheel on

Yeah. All through and waiting. It's just the steering wheel was really really stiff to go back onto the column and that's as far as I have managed to get it lol.

Yeah there is one slot each side. I've matched the wheel to the squib.

I've done this as much as I can. It went it a bit more but it literally wont go any further now. It still looks as though it might be sticking out a bit too much though. But maybe I am just being obsessive.

How does this compare to normal? Will it case any problems if it was sticking out more than normal?

Cheers mate

Re: Urgent help needed removing sterling wheel.

Arghhh made a proper school boy lol. Didn't make note of what angle my old wheel was at before I took it off. And I've put the new one back on slightly off centre lol!! Driving along the road the wheel is pointing to 10-11 oclock which is very annoying. Looks like i'll be doing it all again tomorrow woohooo.

How do you make a school boy??, also make sure wheels are straight before taking off and when refitting and make sure you dont damage the airbag and horn wires

Re: Urgent help needed removing sterling wheel.

I didn't check the position of the wheels to check they were completely straight. Absolute idiot lol!

I was obsessively careful with all the wires and plugs though. Probably too much so! So they'll all be fine.

Cheers

Re: Urgent help needed removing sterling wheel.

You can't put the 172 / 182 wheels back on wrong!

There are slots each side (i think they are called Knurls) You just need to line them up and it should be perfect. I reckon you haven't lined it up correctly!

LOL

When i did mine it was ever so slightly off even though i had my wheels straight, had to make an adjustment, couldnt leave it.

Re: Urgent help needed removing sterling wheel.

That's what I'm like. Even if its just a little bit out I wouldn't be able to leave it until its perfect.

Can you reconnect the battery and drive the car up the road to test it without re-fitting the air bag?

Or would that cause problems?

You clearly can mate lol.

I lined up the slots. But they are only on a plastic thing with the wires which freely rotates round the column.

So you could easily put it back onto the column at a wonky angle and just rotate the wires and the 'knurls' round to meet the hole on the wheel. Like I did lol.

I would'nt mate, the airbag ecu would reconise that no front airbag is fitted and i've no idea if it would be a good thing to do or not

Re: Urgent help needed removing sterling wheel.

I've put the wheel back on. Hopefully straight now lol. Was a proper bugger to get off!

But now the bloody air bag light is on now lol.

Theres two air bag connections isn't there. Top and bottom.

Any way I can distinguish what one might be the problem if I take them out and put them in again but the light is still on?

Maybe I've damaged one of them. But I was being extremely careful.

Re: Urgent help needed removing sterling wheel.

The airbag light came on when I reinstalled my wheel the first time. When I took it back out it turned out that I hadn't pushed the botton connection all the way in. You really do have to make sure the plugs are in as far as they will go.

Re: Urgent help needed removing sterling wheel.

Since i have had my car, the steering wheel has faced the 1 oclock position.

Is there any way i can take it off and put it back on central, or will it only go back on in the same position that i took it off?

There seems to be mixed answers on this.

Thanks :)

You can put back on straight, Just make sure the wheels are pointing straight before refitting.

haha, i put the same comment in this thread a while ago looking back at it. i did mine twice as it wasnt quite right first time. Just be careful removing and replacing wires u will be fine.

Re: Urgent help needed removing sterling wheel.

I really don't get how you can put it back on wrong, I swear they are splined lol?!
And I'd check the wheel alignment if your wheel isn't straight and you haven't removed the steering wheel at all.

I havnt had the car since new mate lol.

Ive only had it 4 month and it has been like it since i bought it so one of the previous owners might have had it off at some point as my car has different thumb grips to the standard ones too.

Re: Urgent help needed removing sterling wheel.

I tried adjusting my steering wheel today and its splined, it can only go on one way so i dont know how people are putting them back on in a different position to how they took them off?

Re: Urgent help needed removing sterling wheel.

in that case, i would look at ur rear suspension and shocks if your steering wheels out. last time mine was off like that, i found out the hard way, slid off a roundabout took the front subframes out, 2 tires, and complete arm. lol.

Re: Urgent help needed removing sterling wheel.

The rear shocks and suspension are fine mate, the bloke that fitted my brand new springs about three month ago told me so.

So its deffinately not the springs as they are near enough brand new, also the steering wheel wasnt straight before i had my springs fitted, and its exactly the same with them fitted.

Ill get the tracking sorted when i get time, it might be that.

Thanks for the heads up tho :)

mmm, could be tracking yer. when i removed my 2 rear shocks after have steering wheel off for soooo long, turned out that 1 of the shocks was diff from the other and also, the 1 was shot, but not to the normal extent of bounce, was a bit weird.

if i was you (on a serious note) take it easy cornering. is it to the left or the right? mine was to the right. and i forgot to mention it happened a second time also, but i was lucky. turned out to be another rear shock on the same onside side. ive never been happy with the clio's steering/suspension stuff, just always seems to be dicey. maybe ive just been unlucky. but dont take a steering wheel being off center lightly!

thing with shocks as well, is unless you get them out and press them urself as testing, you can never be quite sure whether they are really shot or not. most garages just go "yer there fine" as they probably just did the bounce test.....

as it happens my steering wheel is off to the right at the moment, im getting the tracking seen to tomorrow. if that doesnt fix it, im going to pull all the struts /springs and shocks out for checks. lol

Yes mine is also to the right but its only slight, ill get the tracking done and if that doesnt sort it ill take it from there.

The handling etc seems fine tbh so hopefully its only that, i only wanted the wheel facing forward because im a little ocd lol.

Ill get it sorted one way or another.

Thanks :)
