v6 255 or merc sl

ok, im torn between making a decision in next day or two !

what would you guys go for ?

im looking to sell my 172 mk 2 and either :

Buy a new V6 255 (swan renault chichester)

or a second hand Merc SL "n" reg 320 (blue with sand leather) 33,000 miles.

2 totally different cars but still im personally at a crossroads on the decision.

Help ?

what would you choose and why ?

is image more important than the actual drive ?

the 172 is a great car and the v6 is even more fun the but the merc is a different drive altogether . HELP !!!????

depends which you prefer, like you say I am sure they are very different to drive. I love the Vee but .... its completely personal I think !!

If you want to impress the neighbours go for the Merc.

If you dont care Id go for the v6.

I know which would turn more heads and put a smile on your face.

Most of your answers will probably sway towards the V6 I would have thought. I certainly would go for the 255 V6. Stunning.

Tom

I would go with the majority on here and say a V6 Clio

Perhaps if you really want a balanced opinion, why dont you post the same message on a Merc website?

My hubby drives a convertible BMW which doesnt interest me in the slightest and I have only driven it three times but I know that if he had a V6 Clio that I would want to drive it every day! I wouldnt want to drive a Merc if he had one either.

The V6 Clio would probably cost £10,000 more than the older Merc!

Hope this helps in your decision-making!! ;)

thanks for the response everyone.

i like the sl but the v6 is so much more fun to drive and im having difficulty selling my 172 becuase i dont want to but i cant afford both.

pic of sl to follow.

Im guessing u got bout £20k to spend right ? Id get an audi a4 (New Shape) With sports kit. 2.0 :D

no comparison. The clio V6 everyday of the week.

that merc is the one, and N-reg is almost 10 years old, although not really a problem but when compared to a brand new V6 54 reg its alot different.

i personally think those mercs lack character, and have an old feel and look to them.

See what the servicing is like too, had bother with Swan (Worthing) getting stuff done under warrenty. Seem eager to sell a car but not back it up too well. Think Chichester is bigger though so could make a difference.

If you buy a V6 you will be a driving god amongst mere mortal drivers like the rest of us.

If you buy an N reg merc youll look like a pikey who bought an N reg Merc.

Mercs can be prone to breaking down big time, got an ex-merc techy at work, siad they are terrible.

So go for the V6 Imo, but its really upto you.

I drove a 280SL once. It took me months to get over it. It was Cyan blue in colour. Although with the roof down I had some Chav sat next to me at traffic lights tell me I had a cool car. Personally I couldnt stand it. LOL.

yeh and buy a reliable renault !!;)

lol its not just an everyday merc, its a top of the range job.

also have you considered the cl range? theyre going quite cheap. stick on a set of khans and lower it and itll be really nice.

although if i were you id go for the clio as it is newer and has a warranty, and its more of a younger persons car.

Clio V6 is a Clio V6. whereas the Merc SL320 is an "old merc". Mercedes and BMW is all about fighting it out with the neighbours to have the better car and the better house. No one will care that you have an SL320. Whereas if you had a new SL350, SL500, SL600 or SL55 AMG then yes, you would be Mr. Pimp Daddy but having an old merc is just tacky.

V6 is new, and is iconic too.

buy the v6,youll have more fun and be more individual.....mercs are everywhere....unless you had the money for an sl55 i wouldnt bother

LMFAO - top comment! :D

I was fortunate enough to win a Clio v6 earlier this year (more jam than Hartleys - I know) and my sister has an SL. Even she thinks the v6 is awesome when she had a play.

I have never driven a car and had so many stares and people gawping at me even though I have had some nice cars in the past.

Follow your heart - take the v6. You know it make sense.

Remember: Were down here for a good time, not a long time - get the merc when you retire and the pulse slows to below 20, then itll feel... average!

more like its almost the bottom of the SL range and a decade old.... TEN BOB MILLIONAIRE springs to mind!!!!!! go for the V6!!!!!

Yeah the SL320 is no where near top of the pile..

I agree with what other people have been saying, its old, dated and completely overshadowed by the new SL. You will indeed look like a pikey hoping to look rich. With the V6 you will be respected for making an original choice.

but new is not always better -

older car granted but much better quality higher profile.

how about the SL 500 or ive just seen an SL 600 ! I must say it doesnt look 10 years old .

Well if u get a 5/600, ud have to re-mortage ure house to afford the fuel bills!

I must admit I do LOVE the old SL (especially the Barabus 7.3l one!) but if you were to get it, you HAVE to get a private plate, because an N-reg SL just looks like someone whos bought an old Merc coz its a merc.

For the fun factor, Id be down to my local renault dealer with £27k in the flashiest of flashes!

i was referring to the sl range. i know the 320 isnt the top of the sl range, only the 280 is below it. but the sl range is one of the top merc ranges.

I know its not the same motor, but I recently sold my C180 Merc for a 172, cos although the Mercs a lovely car it is sooooo boring to drive....

I actually grin on my way to work now!!

I went for a V6, obviously. But it depends what you like.

Ive always thought life was just to short to own a Merc, you could die any day. I that happened to me and I had a Merc in the garage rather than a V6 Id be absolutly gutted.

Id come back and haunt some V6 owner.

im also think of residual values ,

not knocking the v6 as its a stunning car but the values drop quite badly.

there is a brabus SL 600 but im not worried about fuel bills to be honest.

the 280 SL is badly underpowered but the 320 seems ok but as we have mentioned before , not a patch on the actual driving experience of the 172.

The 500 is a good car and hardly an average car regardless of age - (Flagship Model bar the 600)

i would put some AMGs on it if they wernt on it or the other option is the CLK AMG 55 ! Now thats a car which is mental !

Im really struggling to sell the 172 - Its got a place in my heart to be honest and having owned 23 "hot hatches" this is the one thats put a smile on my face (even more than the Mk2 16v Golf)

Oh The Agony !!! lol

v6.. no comparison.

Ive driven a merc C220 d (i know its not the same as a sl320) and tbh with ya, its crap. I felt like my dad, and hes 40+ (yes that is old.. u kronies!)

If i had that kind of money, i would buy the V6, i wouldnt even have to think about it.

"modified" mercs look sh*te, there are loads of them in blackburn with blacked out windows, and they are all tacky..

mercs
V6

some mercs if kitted properly look good but im with you chewy - many look tacky.

would love a brabus - now thats a car.

Hope the V6 wins!!

Incidentally why a new V6 costing an extra £10,000 on top of the cheapo Merc? If you want to keep up with your neighbourly Joneses, why dont you want to spend the equivalent amount of money on the poor mans Merc?
